What are Search

Engines?

Search Engine

• A search engine is nothing but an answering machine which provides the user with relevant data based on the query. E.g. Google, Firefox, Bing.

• A search engine provides the data based on relevance and ranks the data based on popularity. More popular the site/page/ document is the more valuable information it contains.

Types Of Search Engines:1. Crawl based search engines:

These type of search engines create their listings automatically by using a piece of software to “crawl” or “spider” the web and then index what it finds to build the search base.E.g.: Google

2. Human powered directory: These type of search engines depend on human editors to create their listings. Here , changes made to individual web pages will have no effect on how these pages get listed in the search results.E.g.: Yahoo directory, Open directory and Looksmart.

1.Transactional query: a transactional query is nothing but doing an action like creating a Google account, booking a ticket, downloading a song etc.

3.Navigational query: navigational query is nothing but going to a particular website like go to login page of Facebook etc.

Spiders and Crawlers

Spiders and crawlers are nothing but the search engines’ automated robots which searches the web for the information based on the query and provides the user with a list of relevant and meaningful information.

Indexing

Crawlers make use of links to reach the documents on the web. Once the crawler crawls the required page it makes a copy of the page and stores it in its database. This is known as Indexing. This is used to provide the result instantaneously.

Processing

When the user enter the search query, the search engine compares each string of the search query with the indexed pages in the database.

Calculating Relevancy

It is possible that more than one page may contain the search string. So the search engine calculates the relevancy of each of the pages in its index to the search string.

Retrieving Results

The last step in search engine activities is retrieving the best matched results and display them on the browser.

Limitations of crawling and indexing 1.Online forms: The content behind the online forms(e.g. login) may remain hidden.

2.Duplicate versions of the same page.

3. Error in website crawling which will lead to the blocking of entire search engine.

4. Poor link structures: if the links are not understandable by the search engine it will lead to minimal display of the content .

5.Non text content: Content like images, video, audio may not be crawled.

SEO stands for search engine optimization.

It is a methodology of strategies and techniques used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine.

A keyword is a phrase in your web content that make it possible for people to find your site through search engines.

Keywords are of two types: Global keywords and Local keywords. Global keywords have larger number of search results. E.g. ”Books” where as local keywords are more specific and have fewer results. E.g. ”best restaurants in Bangalore”.Tools like Google Adwords Keyword Planner suggests keywords and also provides search volume and competition for a particular keyword which determines exact value of each keyword.

Some of the best SEO practices include:Using the keywords prominently in the titles, near the top of the page, 2 to 3 times in the body of the page, once in alt attribute of an image on the page and once in the url.

Title tag defines the title of a document. The title should be accurate, relevant to the content of the web page and readable and descriptive.

Description

Description is nothing but the concise explanation of the contents of the web page. The description should employ keywords intelligently and it should be written in such a way that the searcher will want to click on it. The description should be optimally between 150 to 160 characters.

Images are the best way to increase traffic and gain better rankings for your website. Images are optimised using the alt text which helps the crawler to crawl the image on a particular page. Alt text is nothing but the text search engine uses to understand the image. To include it, add alt=”example text” in the image tag.

Heading tag is used to represent the different elements of a webpage. It has an impact on both SEO and usability of the page. In order to establish relevancy, search engines compare the words in the header tag with the associated section's content.

Spiders check for keyword between the header tags and other parts of the page. The h1 is the most important tag and it should never be skipped on a page. Search spiders pay attention to the words used in the h1 tag as it should contain a basic description of the page content, just as the page title does. Heading tags give the user a clear idea of what the page content is about. It is also important not to stuff the heading with keywords.

The URL

URL is nothing but the web address of a particular page. The url should be readable and contain around 50 to 60 characters. It is best practice to match the url to the titles whenever possible and follow the hierarchy while creating url for each page to gain a better ranking.

1.Page headers: page headers provide site identity and usually are at the top of the page.

2. Home link: Placing your organization /site logo at the top of the page and linking that logo to the home page is a best practice.

3. Global navigation: headers are more frequently use as location for global navigation. It increases the usability and search visibility. Tabs are also the commonly used convention for global navigation.

4.search box: Search boxes when included increaser user friendliness and they usually located at the right corner of the page;

5. About us: About us tells outline the company philosophies/goals and what exactly they do. It can also be a place for user testimonials.

6. Contact information: Providing the contact information such as phone number, email address increases the business and adds legitimacy to the site.

7.content/ body of the site: The website should contain relevant and readable content as the content is the reason for the users to visit your website. The content can be made attractive by including images and video clips that are relevant to the topic.
