Terminology• Bow - The front of the ship is called

the bow. Defining the front from the back is necessary for defining the two other most common sailing terms: port (left of the bow) and starboard (right of the bow).

• Aft - The back of a ship or sailboat; also known as the stern.

• Port - Always the left-hand side of the boat when you are facing the bow.

• Starboard - The right-hand side of the boat when you are facing the bow.

Remember

• Safety: Respect the boom and always wear a lifejacket!

• Find a mentor: When you have a great guide you can learn anything.

• Practice: Practice will make you more comfortable on the boat.

• Invest: Take a sailing course, do research from books, and find a friend with experience to talk you through the harder challenges.
