Where Should You Place a Flower Bed?

• There are many areas that may seem suitable for a flower bed; however this will actually vary depending on which types of vegetation you intend on planting. When considering what plants you intend to use for you flower bed that take sometime to check your climate zone and find out what plants are known to thrive more efficiently in your climate.

What Tools and Materials• Shovel(s) – You will need a couple good shovels to dig up and clear out the area you plan

on laying your flower bed.

• Rake – You will use a rake to clean out your dug out area for your flower bed.

• Tiller (optional) – A tiller can be manual or mechanical, it will help you to turn over the earth and mix your compost into the flower bed for your necessary nutrients.

• Compost – You will need some compost to lay out and mix into your broken up ground to add nutrients for the plants.

• Mulch – You will use mulch as your top layer to hold your plants in place and offer soft ground to promote growth.

• Weed paper – You should use a layer of weed paper to minimize weeds growing up from your soil and robbing your planted vegetation from nutrients and space.

• Work gloves – You should wear a pair of work gloves to prevent blisters; digging up even the small amount for a flower bed can be tough on your hands!

How to Prepare a Flower Bed

• Dig up and clear out the area you are placing your flower bed. It is ideal to dig out four to six inches to allow ample room for your compost to be laid out and spread evenly.

• Remove all rocks and weeds, as well as any roots you find in your flower bed area.

• Set your weed paper in place at the base of your flower bed area.

• Then spread your compost and dirt out evenly across the entire area to cover and hold your weed paper in place.

• Rake the area and get your compost and dirt evenly spread and broken apart across the entire area.

• Spacing your plants appropriately, dig out the holes and set your seeds or young plants in place.

• Go back and spread your mulch out evenly across the area and be sure not to smother your plants!

• You can add a stone or rock perimeter to add a nice clean finished look. Then water the area thoroughly, and enjoy your new flower bed.
