1b. PERMISSION At this level of leadership, people follow you because they have given you permission to develop a relationship with them. Great leaders inspire and motivate other leaders to perform with excellence. In order to motivate and produce the best results, a leader takes a genuine interest in others. Great leaders train, coach, mentor, encourage and empower!

1c. PRODUCTION The third level of leadership is about getting results with a team. Every organization, and therefore every leader, must achieve results in order to grow and expand. Results-oriented behaviors include setting the vision, thinking strategically, making decisions and initiating action to achieve that vision. Producing results in the production level means casting the vision and holding others accountable.

1d. PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT Great leaders embrace developing others both personally and professionally. Highly effective leaders realize that time invested in developing others has an immeasurable impact on leading organizational success and employee satisfaction. Using the other levels of leadership (Position, Permission and Production) together helps leaders effectively develop others. At this level of leadership, you use your experience and knowledge to reproduce your own skills in the lives of others. When you do this, people follow you because of what you've done for them.

How do you spot a leader ? According to Robert

Townsend, they come in all sizes, ages, shapes,

and conditions. Some are poor administrators,

while some are not overly bright. There is a clue:

Since some people are mediocre, the true leader

can be recognized because somehow his people

consistently demonstrate superior

performances.

1e. PINNACLE At this level of leadership, you have helped many other leaders over a long period of time that you have earned the respect of people who follow you because of what you represent. The results in this level represent your awareness of your emotions – yours and others – and the appropriateness of your response to them. The scores in this category reflect the amount of respect you receive and give to others (and may also be referred to as emotional intelligence).

CLIMBING THE STEPS OF LEADERSHIP

• The higher you go, the longer it takes.• The higher you go, the higher the level of

commitment.

• The higher you go, the easier it is to lead.• The higher you go, the greater the growth.• You never leave the base level.• If you are leading a group of people, you will

not be on the same level with everyone.• For your leadership to remain effective, it is

essential that you take the other influencers within the group with you to the higher levels.

Some Leaders develops Followers and other develop Leaders. Reasons for these approaches are:

1.DESIRE• Leaders who develops follower needs

to be Needed . (Need to be Needed) and

• Leaders who develops Leaders needs to be SUCEEDED.

(Need to succeed them)

Page 20: Maxwell leadership 5 levels

One group says to the followers

“We need you to complete task” “Others equip somebody to the

job and walk away” They like to give others more responsibilities.

Maxwell quotes Ralph Nichols: "The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them". Developing good listening skills will lead to your peers wanting to spend time with you, to confide in you, and ultimately to see your advice. "That is the starting point for influence with them".

3) Be available beyond business hours. This is related to the previous point. Having common interests is all very well, but when these become shared they are far more meaningful.4) Have a sense of humor He quotes the comedian Victor Borge here: "Laughter is the closest distance between two people"!Particularly in difficult situations, a shared laugh can help form strong bonds.

5) Tell the truth when others don't .The quote here is from Henry Ford: "Your best friend is he who brings out the best that is within you". Sometimes that means speaking the truth, even when it is difficult to do so.
