Feedback & Debriefing

Feedback is used in interview( if candidate asked) ,annual and interim performance appraisal, individual and group assessment centers and in training and development activities.

Debriefing is used in Coaching sessions.

Feedback Techniques

It relates to the professional standards .

It is based upon direct observations and evidence of planning and preparation.

It identifies targets which are achievable in the short term.

It concentrates on a few, achievable targets.

It is a shared experience between the observer and observed and where actions for development

and targets are agreed.

It stresses what has been achieved and presents a balance of strengths and needs.

Debriefing

DEBRIEFING PRACTICES

It is usually wise for mentors to deal with:

the positive points about the session

areas for development

targets to meet in future sessions.

Debriefing Skills

Debriefing requires a range of inter-personal skills. Positive, warm, non-verbal

communications are important, for example, smiling and making. eye-contact

Becoming excited, raising ones voice and adopting a confrontational stance

("You've got a nerve to say that, considering you've only been here five minutes.")

are not likely to promote confidence or build up a positive relationship with a student.
