Defense attorney Joe Tacopina of The Law Offices of Tacopina Seigel & Turano obtained an acquittal in 2011 for a New York City police officer accused of rape. After receiving a call to assist a highly intoxicated woman, two officers were suspected of raping her after escorting her into her East Village apartment. Following a two-month trial, the officers were convicted of official misconduct because they entered the woman’s apartment.

However, they were found not guilty of all the other charges, which included falsifying business records and burglary. In 2009, the case ignited outrage in New York after the officers were indicted. Many had thought that a conviction would be a formality. The case was particularly challenging for prosecutors due to the lack of DNA evidence and the accuser’s inability to recall some of the details of the night in question. Tacopina called the case one of his major victories.
