ITTI: Building IP Capacity Advancing Global Innovation

Recently, Pierce Law launched the International Technology Transfer Institute (ITTI). ITTI provides knowledge, educational and networking resources to build sustainable capacity in IP management, technology transfer and information access.

The International Technology Transfer Institute (ITTI) is dedicated to fostering innovation in developing countries.

ITTI Mission PI/SJ: Developing country access to appropriate and critical innovations in health and agriculture … vaccines for tropical and neglected diseases, insect resistant crops for sub-Saharan Africa, as well as identification of potentially valuable biodiversity (e.g., algal strains as bio-fuel resources for commercial production).

The mission of ITTI is firmly rooted in the time-honored tradition of the Franklin Pierce Law Center, integrating scholarship, practice, education and outreach into a comprehensive program that seeks to promote social justice and advance the global public interest. Alleviating suffering caused by poverty, hunger and disease is the foundation of social justice.

The first essential component for social justice is adequate food for all mankind. Public-Private Partnerships are needed to share research and development costs for “pro-poor” biotechnology. ITTI implements its mission via:

scholarly research and publication, in-country activities including meetings, workshops, lectures and conferences (several with WIPO), patent landscape analyses of innovations in health and agriculture, and a clinical program which engages student contribution to ITTI programs.

Patent landscape reports have included:

insect resistant sweet potato for Sub-Saharan Africa, HIV vaccines, and novel biofuel resources and technologies.

Access to Information Drives Innovation

Patent landscape reports are completed in 15 weeks, i.e. in one semester.

Patent landscape reports are conducted by Pierce Law student teams, comprising both J.D. and graduate students from diverse and international backgrounds.

ITTI is completing a comprehensive study of the law, science and technology policy, higher education, finance and business infrastructures in India and China to assess the potential of developing public-private partnerships that will produce economic benefit from publicly-funded research in universities and research institutes.

Pierce Law also made significant contributions to the recently published IP Management in Health and Agricultural Innovation: A Handbook of Best Practices.

The IP Handbook addresses IP management issues and approaches within the context of accelerating developing country access to critical innovations in health and agriculture.
