Alabama's Penalties for Uninsured Cars
When Alabama implemented its Mandatory Liability Insurance
Law in 2013, lawmakers included in the statute a tier of costly
penalties for those caught driving without proper Alabama car
insurance.
These penalties include:
✗ First offense: $500 fine;
✗ Second or subsequent offense: $1,000;
✗ Suspension of your driver’s license for 6 months;
✗ Suspension of your car registration;
✗ Second or subsequent offense: an automatic four-month
suspension of your car registration.
After all initial penalties are paid and any suspensions
discharged, you will owe additional fees to reinstate your car
registration.
✗ First offense: $200
✗ Second or subsequent offense: $400
Alabama law also requires you obtain an SR-22 Certificate, also
known as a “certificate of insurance,” and provide this to the
Alabama Department of Motor Vehicles when reinstating your
driver’s license. Any state-authorized agent can help you through
the process. The SR-22 is not insurance, but proof of insurance
as provided by your car insurance agency.
So, if you are not currently covered by an Alabama auto policy,
next time you pick up your keys, weigh the cost of penalties,
reinstatement fees, waiting in line, and not having a license to
the peace of mind that comes with knowing you are Alabama
insurance compliant, and get in touch with an agent ASAP.
