Out of all the examples that underline the principle Sharing Economy AirBNB is most definitely the most

prevalent one. Founded in 2008, this online platform is for a) people who want a relatively cheap overnight stay and/or an

overnight experience abroad that a regular travel agency does not offer, and b) people who have a spare room or

want to rent their homes temporarily. They can upload their house or room at AirBnB. As a visitor of the site you

can choose in which city you want to stay and in what neighbourhood.

The social aspect to it makes it feel more secure, and you can read reviews from previous visitors and the

residents that rent out their place. AirBnB is as such an affordable way for what can well result in a remarkable stay. In 2014 or 2015 AirBNB is expected to be bigger

than the Hilton Hotel Group.

Onde Fui Roubado (“Where I was held up”) is a collaborative website with the aim to help reduce

violence in big and medium sized cities in Brazil. The site educates people as how to best avoid crimes by logging, collating, analysing and fostering comments and debate about each occurrence that is entered there. By sorting

crimes by type and garnering intelligence from each story, patterns are established that could help the population in general to avoid or deal with urban

violence. Analysing and preventing urban violence through an online platform is a good example of

Selforganizing Self-Reliance.Who said social media and sharing was just for fun

purposes?

As part of an art project executed by Florentijn Hofman, a huge plastic duck was placed in the harbour of Hong Kong. The Chinese government, who is not so keen on hypes like these, banned the initiative. Needless to say this led to protests. Accordingly so, countless of people began taking pictures of ducks in all sorts of places, to

post them on their virtual walls. In Turkey, the image of the penguin became relevant

when police attempted to aggressively disperse protesters at the Gezi park (during the recent civil rights protests). CNN Turk refused to cover the news. Instead,

they broadcasted a documentary about penguins. On Facebook, protest supporters began to circulate pictures

of penguins holding up different slogans about human rights. The penguins instantly became a symbol of the self-censorship of Turkish media and the government.

This is the Social Web as an accelerator of protest, making it a quite an effective appliance.

PatientsLikeMe is both a patient network as well as a real-time research platform to advance medical science.

Hence, patients can connect with other patients who have the same disease or condition to track and share

experiences. In the process, they generate data that can in turn help researchers, pharmaceutical companies, regulators, providers and non-profit organizations to

develop more effective products and services. Hence, it is a neat example of the Power of the Social Web.
