Bruxism is excessive grinding of teeth or jawclenching, typically during sleep . It causes jawdis- function and deterioration of tooth structure.It is an oral parafunctional activity.

There are 2 types of bruxism:

SLEEP BRUXISM: occurs during sleep.

AWAKE BRUXISM: occurs in wakefulness.

•Snoring is a condition in which there is production of sound while

breathing during sleeping. Noise of snoring is produced by vibration

of swollen soft tissue in the mouth and back of the throat.

•Snoring affects the quality of sleep of the individual as well as the

person sleeping nearby.

•Snoring during sleeping indicates Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

People with Obstructive Sleep Apnea tends to stop breathing

several times in a night, which disturbs their sleep cycle causing

sleep deprivation.

•The lack of air disturbs sleep as the body does not have enough

oxygen, to fulfill this lack body responds by waking up itself to

get better amount of oxygen.

Causes Of Bruxism:

• Stress and anxiety

• Abnormal bite

• Sleep disorder or sleep apnea

• Certain medications or recreational drugs

Causes Of Snoring:

• Mouth anatomy

• Nasal problems

• Sleep deprivation

• Sleeping position

• Obstructive sleep apnea

Symptoms Of Bruxism:

• Worn out tooth enamel exposing deeper layer of teeth

• Hypersensitivity and increase tooth pain

• Dull headache

• Sleep disruption

• Tired or tight jaw muscles that wont open or close completely

Symptoms Of Snoring:

• Noise during sleep

• Morning headache

• Sore throat

• Restless sleep

• Waking up choking or gasping

MANAGEMENT OF BRUXISM AND SNORING

In order to avoid it and provide peaceful sleep, we help ourpatients with night and snore guard.Night guard provide a protective barrier to upper and lower teeth,thereby avoiding the damage. Depending upon the condition nightguard is prescribed, there are three types of night guard:

•Soft night guard•Hard acrylic night guard•Dual laminated night guard

Snoring can be avoided by mandibular advancementdevice(MAD)and tongue stabilizing device (TSD).One keeps themandible forwardly placed and other stabilizes the tongue bothavoiding the vibration production that causes snoring.
