METHODS IN HEALTH EDUCATION

1-individual approach-

the individual should be educated about the effects of good oral hygiene in the prevention of diseases.

Advantage-can be done in the dentist’s clinic and there is an opportunity for the individual to ask questions and clear his doubts.

Disadvantage-health education given only to those who come in contact with the health personnel's.

Group approach

*Its an effective way of educating the community*

a.Chalk and talk (lectures)A lecture is defined as a carefully prepared oral presentation of facts, organized thoughts and ideas by a qualified person.• Learning is passive and communication is one way.

b.SymposiumA series of speeches on a selected topics In the end ,audience may ask question.

c.Group discussion6-12 members are

seated in a circle.

There should be a group leader who initiates the subject.

Disadvantage-unequal participation.

d. panel discussion

Panel of 4-8 experts sit and discuss a topic in front of an audience.

Audience are allowed to ask questions.

e. WorkshopIt consists of a series of

meetings with emphasis on individual work with the help of the resource persons.

f. Conferences or seminar

Programs range from half day

to one week.They usually have

a theme.

3.Mass approach• Health education for a large community or

the general public can be given using the mass media of communication.

• Various mass media used are-Television-coverage to large no.of peopleRadio-economical and broader audience than TV.

Posters -they should catch the eye and must be artistic.
