Health Education Methods Health education is an

activity and efforts to convey health messages to communities, groups or individuals.

Objectives : to give information and ensure

knowledge and understanding of health issues and to enable well-informed decisions to be made

to change people’s individual attitudes and behaviour so that they adopt a healthy lifestyle

a) Individual Education Method

used for new behavior, or someone who has started to be attracted to behavior change or innovation

b) Group Education Method Large Group – more than 15 people

Methods :a) Lecture/Talk ( appropriate for group target with high or low

education level)- Things that need to be considered by speakers :

i) Preparation- Learn the material systematically, e.g. presented in diagram or chart- Prepare teaching tools, e.g. brochure, slide, sound system

ii) Implementation- Confidence in attitude and appearance- Loud and clear voice- Views should be directed to all participants- Maximize the use of audio visual asisstant (AVA)

b) Seminarappropriate for group target middle and above

education levelseminar is a presentation of a single or multiple

profesional on a topic considered important in the community

2) Small Group Participants are less than 15 people methods suitable for small groups include:

Group discussion

-their positions are facing each other so that all can be actively participated.

-the leader sits between the participants

-same level

-have freedom to give opinion

-to begin, leader gives questions or cases about the topic

-leader control the group so that no one can dominate the discussion, everybody has the same opportunity to give an opinion

Brain storming

- modified method from group discussion, but the same principle

- the different is, in the beginning the leader give a problem (case) then all the participants have to give answers or opinions.

-then all the answers and opinions are write on the flipchart or whiteboard.

-when someone is giving his/her opinion, no one can interrupt

-after everyone has done giving opinions, then they can comment and the discussion happens.

Snow balling- Pairings- Questions are given- After about 5minutes, 2 partners combine together and

discuss the same thing, find the solution- 2 partners combine with other 2 partners and so on

until become a class discussion

Bruzz Group

- class divide into buzz group

- question/ case given

- discuss n find the solution

- then conclusion from all buzz group collected n find the best conclusion

Role Play

- participants play a role as they were instructed

- representing how daily interaction/ communication in a duty

Simulation Game

- health advices are provided on a game such as monopoly

- play like a monopoly and get the health advices

c. Methods of Public Education

Use media massa to promote health education to people

This method is generalized to all age, sex, job, socioeconomical status, educational level or others. So it is important to plan first the health promotion.

Usually use to make people realize so that they can change the attitude.

Examples :

1) Public Speaking

in events such National health day, Health Minister or someone else will give a speech in front of public.

2) Speech discussion about health in media electronic ( TV or radio)

3) Simulation, dialogue between doctor and patient or other health officer about a disease or other health problem on television or radio.

4) TV or radio programs about health education

5) Articles or questions and answers in newspaper or magazine

6) Bill Board or banner
