DESCRIPTION

Are you choosing to give birth in a Birth Center? If so you want to give birth there and not have to transfer to hospital because you're not coping well with the natural occurring pain of labor contractions. No kidding! Too many Birth Center births end up in hospital due to long labors, tired birthing women and a baby showing signs of distress. You can do heaps to reduce or prevent that happening to you. Prepare your pregnant body with the skills that make birth easier. Learn birth and birth coaching skills. Also remember your Birth Center midwives will do medical assessments, monitor you and your baby and even do some medical procedures. All of these are often called 'interventions'. Using your birth and birth coaching skills means you'll handle all of this better. www.thepinkkit.com

Directing Your Choices • Differentiate between making

choices and having skills▫Choice is based on want and wish▫Skills are based on what you do to

accomplish an activity • You have to “choose” to become

skilled, which is a choice that requires your time and energy

• You cannot choose when your labor will begin but you can choose to use your skills as you help your baby come down, through, and out of your body.

Assessments, Monitoring, and Procedures (AMPs)

• AMPs are part of the standard of practice that all birth professionals agree to uphold

• AMPs are often all considered “interventions” by those advocating “natural birth” yet these two things are not the same.

• While you may hope to have no medical interventions, you need to fully comprehend that most of what you think are interventions are actually considered by medical profession to be simple standards of care that you might not be able to avoid.

• Standards of care are used to reduce “suffering” as well as injury and death. Your behaviour is sometimes what determines how many and how often those standards of care are used.

Its far better to have skills you can work with and around AMPs than not.

▫ A vaginal exam is much more

comfortable if you’ve done the Internal Work and can relax down there than if you are tight and tense.

Birth Plans • Need to write a second Birth Plan

▫ Outline exactly how you will prepare your pregnant body to become a birthing body and what skills both of you will use to work with your baby’s effort to be born.

▫ Show this to you Birth Center staff

• Get lots of information but make certain you have basic breathing and relaxation skills.

The Way of the Future • Hopefully;

▫ More families will have access to Birth Centers

▫ More families will choose to become skilled at birthing so they can succeed in giving birth in a Birth Center.

▫ Families will continue to use their skills to always birth better even if you don’t have the birth you want.
