DESCRIPTION

BackHome: Brain-neural computer interfaces on track to home. Development of a practical generation of BNCIs for independent home use. Objectives: - To foster the transition of BNCIs from labs and rehabilitation centres to independent home use for the individual at need. - To learn how different BNCIs may improve physical and social autonomy of people with disabilities - To reduce the cost and hassle of this transition back to home.

BackHome: Brain-neural computer interfaces on track to

home. Development of a practical generation of BNCIs for

independent home use

The Objectives

To foster the transition of BNCIs from

labs and rehabilitation centres to

independent home use for the individual

at need.

To learn how different BNCIs may

improve physical and social autonomy of

people with disabilities

To reduce the cost and hassle of this

transition back to home.

BackHome is aimed at…

3

…producing applied results, developing

o new and better integrated practical electrode systems

o friendlier and more flexible BNCI software

o better telemonitoring and home support tools

It sets a new standard of usability and comfort

while optimizing reliability and preparation time.

The dry electrode version is based on the proven g.SAHARA

electrodes which don’t need gel and hairwash

The tiny and lightweight

wireless amplifier is attached

to the EEG cap to avoid cable

hassles and to allow

completely free movements

Index

Artifact detection with inverse filter:

• Autoregressive Model is trained initially during training

• System can detect stark differences in EEG (Artifacts, NC-State)

• Method showed to be very promising

Status:

• Pinegger et al. (2014) accepted at BCI Conference

• Good evaluation results , ready to be integrated

Flexible BNCI software

Non Control state detection

Index

Asynchronous P300 BCI:

• P300 causes oscillations in EEG

• Detected through averagingand spectral analysis

• Detects visual attention to P300

• Status:

• Pinegger et al. (under Review) submitted to JNE

• Good evaluation results, to be integrated

The first and second prototype was installed

and tested for User Centred Design feedback

collection at both the end user organizations in

Belfast and Würzburg

Iterative UCD Evaluations

Several focus groups with therapists,

caregivers and users have been held

throughout the region of Northern Ireland

Plenty of electrode and software

tests conducted and published;

Brain Painting has been installed at

home for continued long term

evaluation.

Work in Progress…

The final BackHome product, including g.Nautilus; easy, robust and

fast access to 8+ BNCI subsystems for independent home use;

sensor-based telemonitoring and home support features for the

informal caregiver and the therapist, shall be installed at end users’

homes in December for a final 6 months intensive trial, before

making it commercially available.

The final BackHome research prototype, including g.Nautilus and

other BNCI and AT equipment; open and extensible hybrid BCI to

fusion multimodal inputs; highly modular and configurable BNCI User

Interface, BNCI subsystems and backend services, shall be tested

and delivered at the end of the project as a test bed for on-going

research, innovation, and technology transfer.
