WATERPOLLUTION

WATER POLLUTIONWhen God created man, He gave them the ability to think. With that, man created tools to make his life easier. We called this technology. But that accomplishment comes with a price. Technology has given us a lot but it also gave us waste products that cause pollution.

Page 3: Water Pollution

DEFINITIONWater pollution takes place when a body of water is negatively affected due to the addition of large amounts of materials to the water.

Page 4: Water Pollution

DESCRIPTION/CAUSESThe overuse of pesticides and fertilizers on soil can also causewater pollution. Fertilizers fromfarms seep into the soil, then goes to nearby lakes and rivers. When this occurs, the fertilizer will enhance the growth of algae and fungi in the water causing red tide. Pesticides that reach rivers kill all tiny living things in it.

The improper way of disposing chemical wastes form factories into rivers causes water pollution. Since these chemicals are dissolved in liquid, they will also seep into the ground of nearby places.

DESCRIPTION/CAUSES

Page 6: Water Pollution

Some soils that are acidic become more acidic due to acid rain. Gases and particles of sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide emitted by the combustion of fossil fuel combine with rain and produce acid rain. When acid rain falls on the ground, it may dissolve harmful metals from the soil. Water run-off deposits them in rivers, ponds, and lakes.

DESCRIPTION/CAUSES

Page 7: Water Pollution

DESCRIPTION/CAUSESAll chemicals that are dumped into the ground will eventually end up contaminating our rivers, lakes, and ground water. We must, therefore, be careful in disposing of any household chemical substance like kerosene, detergent, and insecticide because these cause pollution.

EFFECTS ON ENVIRONMENTThe common water pollutants are oil, decaying matter, plastics, and other solid materials thrown into the rivers, seas, and oceans.

Waste materials from factories dumped in the water contain chemicals that are harmful to marine life.

EFFECTS ON ENVIRONMENTOil blocks the oxygen from being dissolved in the water. It kills fishes, corals, and microorganisms living near the surface of the water. Plastics clog water passageways. Detergents and fertilizers contain chemicals that cause water to become a good place for algae to grow and multiply fast.

Page 10: Water Pollution

EFFECTS ON HEALTHThis results in the shortage of oxygen in the body of water. Fish and other aquatic life get suffocated and later die. This gives the water a foul smell and makes it unsafe for use.

Human sewage thrown into the water carries diseases. Some diseases caused by dirty water are typhoid, dysentery, cholera, and diarrhea.
