How to identify threats and improve our chances of staying well

Page 2: Threats To Our Health

What Makes Us Healthy?

• Exercise• Low Stress• Sleep • Fresh air• Sunlight• Hydration• Whole Foods/ Plant Based Diet• Pre and Probiotics

Page 3: Threats To Our Health

What Makes Us Healthy?

• The 7 factors on the previous slide increase our ability to fight infection, creating a strong immune system.

• Our resiliency to the natural decline of aging is reduced by these factors.

• Cell mutations (cancer) are inhibited by the absorption of free radicals, only found in certain foods (none with a bar code).

• Like a car engine lasting years with regular oil changes, bodily systems work more smoothly when vital nutrients are continuously ingested.

Page 4: Threats To Our Health

Immune System

• The role of the immune system is to fight off infections and keep us healthy.

• 80% of our immune system is located in our gut, making food THE primary tool in our healthcare arsenal.

• The majority of Americans do not get enough fruits or vegetables into their diet, which is the primary path to improving gut health.

• Our healthcare system is based on illness not wellness, often treating symptoms over systems, potentially weakening our immunity.

Page 5: Threats To Our Health

Declining Health

• Nearly 1 in 2 Americans live with a chronic disease (CDC)

• New cancer cases will skyrocket globally from an estimated 14 million in 2012 to 22 million new cases a year within the next two decades, the report says. (WHO)

• During that same period, cancer deaths are predicted to rise from an estimated 8.2 million annually to 13 million a year. (WHO)

Why We Get Sick

• Inflammation is the body’s natural response to internal and external threats (i.e. allergens, infection, mold).

• Inflammation is one of the leading results and causes of illness.

• Chronic inflammation can cause problems with nearly every system in the body.

• Treatment of issues seldom involves the earliest cause of the inflammatory process, exposure to everyday toxins.

• Treatments may in fact add to the complexity of the ailment and the compromise of our immune system.

The Questions• Why has China and Russia banned the import of U.S. corn?• Why are the pharmaceutical industries putting adds for

medicines on TV?• Why does the company who owns 80%of the world’s seed supply

also produce Roundup?• Why do people believe that protein only comes from animals?• What is the number one abused drug in the country that nobody

talks about?• Why are their 85,000 toxic chemicals that are in our everyday

life?• Why does the U.S. spend more money on healthcare than any

other nation but have the worse results?

Page 10: Threats To Our Health

The Answers

• Why has China and Russia banned the import of U.S. corn?

Genetically Modified Organisms. If you aren’t familiar with GMO’s, it is imperative you educate yourself as this may be the single greatest threat to humankind. Consider that if a country like China that doesn’t treat its citizens well, don’t want U.S. corn which is nearly all GMO, why is it in nearly everything that we eat here?

Page 11: Threats To Our Health

The Answers

• Why are the pharmaceutical industries putting adds for medicines on TV?

Prescription medications (Pharmaceuticals) rank as most profitable industry in the U.S. In a year that saw a drop in employment rates, a plunge in the stock market and symbols of America’s economy literally come crashing down, the pharmaceutical industry continued its reign as the most profitable industry in the annual Fortune 500 list. Healthcare is big business, depending upon our illness for their profit.

Page 12: Threats To Our Health

The Answers

• Why does the company who owns 90% of the world’s transgenic seed supply and a majority of the regular seeds also produce Roundup?

If you are familiar with DDT, Agent Orange, and Roundup, you may wonder why the company who produced these three toxins want to own seeds. The simple answer is that power and profit comes with dominance of the food industry puts them in complete control. Research Monsanto to learn about the most dangerous company in the world.

Page 13: Threats To Our Health

The Answers

• Why do people believe that protein only comes from animals?

The agricultural industry is extremely powerful spending billions of dollars advertising milk and beef in the last two decades. We have been conditioned to believe that good health comes from animal protein in spite of decades of research which tells us that 6-8% of our diet should be protein, exactly what we will get from vegetables.

Page 14: Threats To Our Health

The Answers

• What is the number one abused drug in the country that nobody talks about?

It’s not alcohol, not heroin, not marijuana, but more destructive to our health than all three. The answer is sugar. Restaurants know this, keeping us coming back, snack companies know this, and most notably, soda companies know this. Refined sugar is a tremendous threat to our health.

Page 15: Threats To Our Health

The Answers

• Why are their 85,000 toxic chemicals that are in our everyday life?

Plastics, cleaning supplies, and beauty products all share something in common. The majority of them are filled with toxic chemicals that are poisoning us every day. If people were aware of the severity of these chemicals and how widespread they are, they might think twice about their use.

Page 16: Threats To Our Health

The Answers

• Why does the U.S. spend more money on healthcare than any nation but have the worst results?

We put a tremendous amount of money into technology, but the people profiting are insurance and pharmaceutical companies who have a strangle hold on healthcare. As a nation we put the least amount of attention into the quality of our food.

Page 17: Threats To Our Health

Analogy

• If we can agree that a plant requires certain things to be healthy: sunlight, water, air circulation, nutrients (phosphorous, magnesium, nitrogen) as well as micronutrients.

• And we can also agree that getting all of these essential conditions can be thwarted by a single threat such as a fungus, insect, or toxin such as weed killer.

• Plants are like humans in that we are both life forms with necessary ingredients to keep us alive and healthy.

• Then consider what happens to humans under the same conditions if we get what we need such as plants, probiotics, etc... But we also introduce threats.

Understanding Trans Fats

What Exactly Are Trans Fats?• Trans fatty acids or trans fats are formed when

manufacturers turn liquid oils into solid fats. Think shortening and hard margarine. Manufacturers create trans fats via a process called hydrogenation. Hydro-what? In a nutshell, hydrogenation is a process by which vegetable oils are converted to solid fats simply by adding hydrogen atoms. Hydrogenation increases the shelf life and flavor stability of foods. Indeed, trans fats can be found in a laundry list of foods including vegetable shortening, margarine, crackers (even healthy sounding ones like Nabisco Wheat Thins), cereals, candies, baked goods, cookies, granola bars, chips, snack foods, salad dressings, fats, fried foods, and many other processed foods.

• Trans fats are currently thought to cause at least 30,000 premature deaths each year. In addition, experts believe just reducing the amount of trans fats in margarines would prevent 6,300 heart attacks annually.

Understanding Casein

What is Casein?• First of all casein is a protein found in milk and other

dairy products. In his book, The China Study, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, reports how he discovered, over many years of cancer research, a possible link between animal protein intake and cancer development. Although Campbell was raised on a farm and loved his milk and eggs and sausage, his scientific curiosity was piqued through the research he conducted as well as reviewed. Because of these potential links he found, he was finally able to receive funding to study the possible effects of protein on cancer.

• What he discovered was that protein did indeed promote cancer development. However it was not all types of protein. What Campbell discovered was that casein, which comprises 85% of the protein in cow’s milk, promoted cancer in all stages of its development. The safe protein, that which did not promote cancer, was plant based. Dietary level of casein that is above a threshold required to meet the rat’s needs for protein, i.e., 10-12% of total calories.

Understanding Sugar

What is Refined Sugar?• Dr. Martin classified refined sugar as a poison because it has been

depleted of its life forces, vitamins and minerals. "What is left consists of pure, refined carbohydrates. The body cannot utilize this refined starch and carbohydrate unless the depleted proteins, vitamins and minerals are present. Nature supplies these elements in each plant in quantities sufficient to metabolize the carbohydrate in that particular plant. There is no excess for other added carbohydrates. Incomplete carbohydrate metabolism results in the formation of 'toxic metabolite' such as pyruvic acid and abnormal sugars containing five carbon atoms. Pyruvic acid accumulates in the brain and nervous system and the abnormal sugars in the red blood cells. These toxic metabolites interfere with the respiration of the cells. They cannot get sufficient oxygen to survive and function normally. In time, some of the cells die. This interferes with the function of a part of the body and is the beginning of degenerative disease."

• Refined sugar is lethal when ingested by humans because it provides only that which nutritionists describe as "empty" or "naked" calories. It lacks the natural minerals which are present in the sugar beet or cane.

• In addition, sugar is worse than nothing because it drains and leaches the body of precious vitamins and minerals through the demand its digestion, detoxification and elimination makes upon one's entire system. So essential is balance to our bodies that we have many ways to provide against the sudden shock of a heavy intake of sugar. Minerals such as sodium (from salt), potassium and magnesium (from vegetables), and calcium (from the bones) are mobilized and used in chemical transmutation; neutral acids are produced which attempt to return the acid-alkaline balance factor of the blood to a more normal state.

Understanding Processed Foods

What are Processed Foods?• Convenience foods come in many different shapes

and sizes and are unhealthy for various reasons. Processed food is processed to enhance the taste of the food, make it more appealing, or give it a longer shelf life. Unhealthy amounts of processed salt, sugar, unhealthy trans fat, bleaching, and harmful chemical additives and preservatives are adding to preserve the food and enhance the taste.

• You may think you are not eating processed food, but they are all around us. Processed food is not only junk food but include food that you may typically find in your refrigerator. Types of processed food include food you may not think is processed.

• List Of Processed Foods: Milk, Cheese, Cereals, Yogurts, Canned Tuna, Canned, Sardines, Canned Salmon, Canned Fruit, Canned Vegetables, Canned Meat, Macaroni, Pasta, Breads, Fruit Juice, Energy Bars, Peanut Butter

Understanding GMO’s

Genetically Modified Organisms?• GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or

animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. These experimental combinations of genes from different species cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.

• Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit.

• A growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights. Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe. In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. In the U.S., the government has approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them and profit from their sale. Increasingly, Americans are taking matters into their own hands and choosing to opt out of the GMO experiment.

Understanding Gluten

What is Gluten?• What Is Gluten?

Gluten is a protein that is found in grains, grains such as wheat, rye, barley,

spelt, triticale, kamut, and possible oat. It is a protein that is hard to digest

and therefore can irritate not only your digestive tract but also your organs.

You can experience symptoms that have been listed above but not always.

You can have gluten sensitivity yet be asymptomatic. Research shows that as

many as 90 million Americans may be negatively affected by gluten and as

many as 10 million may have an illness due to the root cause of gluten

sensitivity.

• How Gluten Causes Disease

When ones digestive system is healthy undigested or partially digested

proteins will be eliminated as fecal matter. However, if ones digestive system

becomes weakened due to poor food choices, food intolerances, alcohol

consumption, eating processed foods and sugars as well as from the normal

day to day stresses of life the ability of the body to digest gluten proteins can

become difficult. As a result the undigested proteins floating through the

bloodstream thus causing an autoimmune reaction. In addition the

protective mucus lining of the intestinal track gets attacked as well. When

this lining breaks down it leads to leaky gut syndrome making one’s immune

system vulnerable and weak.

Healthy Suggestions• Fermented Foods (kombucha, kimchi)• Probiotic rich food such as coconut yogurt• Drink a smoothie or cold pressed juice for breakfast• Sprouted Foods• Nuts, seeds, legumes, and other whole grains• High antioxidant foods such as herbs• Raw vegetables (cruciferous veggies)• Cut out refined sugars, oils, wheat, flour, trans fats, dairy, red meat,

(meat not free range or antibiotic free) ***• Say No to GMO’s• Reduce dependence on plastics and cleaning chemicals• Reduce or eliminate processed foods

Page 27: Threats To Our Health

Additional Ideas

• Brushing teeth with non fluoride toothpaste• Hand washing• Routine physicals for bloodwork• Use chemical free cleaners, makeup• Avoid plastics and never microwave

Tupperware• Keep windows slightly open in bedroom

Page 28: Threats To Our Health

Barriers• Years of marketing from the Agricultural and Pharmaceutical industries have convinced us what is healthy

• PCP who inadvertently support the machine because of a lack of education, pressure from managed care, rising costs of malpractice insurance, and influence by Big Pharma.

• Food is often seen as a convenience that needs to be completed with haste • Change is always met with resistance (forces for sameness versus forces for change) equals resistance • So how long have I been eating wrong and what might that have done to me? Not possible. • How much is it going to cost me to do it right? • When would I find time to learn how to cook differently? • My kids wouldn’t go for it. My partner wouldn’t go for it. • Vegetables go bad so quickly I’ll have to keep running to the supermarket

Page 29: Threats To Our Health

Psychological Barriers

• Resistance to change is strong because we seek comfort, familiarity, security, convenience, and conservation of energy.

• Change means expending more energy that we don’t believe we have.

• We are fearful of what unknown consequences may be discovered through change.

• We are concerned with how we will be perceived by others.

Page 30: Threats To Our Health

Overcoming Resistance

• Know yourself (incremental vs. transitional change). Small steps or big shifts?

• Identify fears and establish a partner to help you work through them

• Fantasize about the prospects for improvement to your health

• Read testimonials and watch videos of others who have been through it

• Consider if there are deeper issues regarding childhood messages and other roots to current ways of thinking/being.
