Storz Instruments – Shaping Human Medicine As We Know It

The world of medicine used to be a whole lot different back in the days of the world wars. The technology was limited but the healthcare needs were dire. Soldiers and civilians both, needed advanced treatment for various injuries and diseases and THAT needed advanced diagnostic powers too. The doctors required a way to be able to examine the human body at close quarters or should I say from the inside. Rudimentary endoscopes were available but the problem was unavailable light. You see, what doctors those days were doing was shining light from small lamps and torches to examine cavities in the body of a patient. The process didn’t serve much purpose as the light was insufficient to view anything. Deeper examinations were not possible. And then there was the possibility of damaging delicate tissue with hot light.

Enter Karl Storz..

This genius had a brilliant plan.. a way to ensure that doctors get a chance to discover exactly what was wrong inside a patient and then be able to administer the best treatment possible. He came up with a way to use right and cold light, which, when introduced into the body cavity provided excellent visibility of the interiors and also allowed documentation of the cavity or organ with the help of image transmission. And this is how Storz instruments came into being.

Modern endoscopy has much to be grateful for to this man. Perhaps this is the reason why his inventions and innovations are now known and acknowledged across the world by his name – Karl Storz instruments. They have pretty much shaped modern medical science as we know it.
