• FLORENCE | Times Daily — Officials with the Better Business Bureau of North Alabama are warning residents of a scam that has been circulating in the area offering people free medical alert systems.

• “We have been hearing about this scam since late April,” said Michelle McDaniel, president and CEO of the BBB of North Alabama.

• She said the scam is directed at older and disabled citizens through “robocalls” that claim to be offering a free medical alert service.

The call, according to McDaniel, is a recorded message that says someone has ordered the system for the resident and the call is just to confirm shipping details and information. McDaniel said the best thing people can do if they get one of these calls is to “hang up” the phone. If anyone should receive a call like this, check the company out first at www.bbb.org or call the BBB at 256-740-8224 or 800-239-1642.
