COURSE DESCRIPTIONMayo Clinic faculty, board certified in Psychosomatic Medicine or medical disciplines, will review principles of medical-psychiatric diagnosis and treatment of patients managed in medical and surgical inpatient and outpatient settings. Featured topics to be covered in depth this year are Functional Neurologic Disorders, Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, and Treatment Resistant Depression. The target audiences are family medicine physicians, general internists, psychiatrists, and selected medical and surgical specialists and subspecialists who manage conditions with significant behavioral or psychiatric contributions.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVESUpon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:1. Describe management strategies for depression, particularly treatment resistant

depression, in patients with comorbid medical illnesses2. Outline strategies for identification and treatment of anxiety disorders in patients

with comorbid medical illnesses3. Describe evidence-based evaluation and management strategies for patients who

have psychophysiological disorders (e.g. functional gastrointestinal disorders, functional movement disorders, behavioral spells)

4. Identify evidence-based pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments for illness anxiety

5. Identify unique elements of managing clinical psychiatric disorders in patients with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia

6. Recognize challenges in the emerging use of medicinal marijuana and outpatient management of chronic pain

INTENDED AUDIENCEThis course has been designed for family physicians, general internists, psychiatrists, physician assistants, and advanced practice nurses.

ABFM-Self-Assessment Module (SAM) – DepressionFacilitated by Mayo Clinic experts, this learning experience allows attendees to work together to review and discuss core competency questions and to decide as a group, the best answers. The SAM will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014 and will be using the Depression module.
