America spends $147B in direct costs on treating health care diseases that could have been prevented by physical activity &

eating habits. That is 2x the federal budget for the Department of Education.

By 2030 increases in health care costs will rise by 113%.

--Chaaban, J. The Economic Costs of Physical Activity

These sessions taught students ways to implement preventive health measures.

Many studies show that an increase in kids eating their vegetables occurs when they have fun with food. This is why I incorporated a veggie creation contest during DiscoveryPaths. Aligned to Ohio

Department of Education Standards, I created this math lesson using ratios

and stats to teach kids about the impact of Type

II diabetes and how to prevent it.

One of my goals when educating youth is to teach them about the mental and emotional benefits to wellness, as well as the importance of communication, relationships, and teams.

This student takes out some frustration by ripping off some kale leaves and throwing them in our stir fry pan! Students were encouraged to use cooking as an outlet for emotions and stress

We always discuss team and communication. I often have kids make up rules and give them options. I find this increases participation and problem solving.

Spreading the message

“Youth are positioned to play a powerful role to help adults understand the impact of the epidemic, to share in developing ways that healthy changes can be made in youth-serving settings, and to influence

their peers and family in joining them in taking action.

---Youth Engagement Guide, Alliance For a Healthier Generation

The message of health is spread to parents. This student shares with his parent about what he learned in Recess Club about how to be healthy. Parents gathered handouts on tips for family health.

In addition to student empowerment, my goal is to create authentic relationships with students. Allow them to see I have, or do, struggle with some of the same issues they face; but, fitness allows me to overcome those struggles in a positive way.
