Mobile Medicine
• Using mobile devices to help doctors and improve patient care
• PDAs and Smartphones (i.e. DIY)
• Tablet PCs (i.e. HIS/EHR)
• In-betweens (UMPCs, etc)
• Medical Devices
• Wireless Networking / Phone Networks
History of Mobile Medicine
• Psion Organizers 1980s• Apple Newton in 1992• Palm Pilot 1996• Pocket PC• Windows Mobile• Smartphones• Tablet PC• UMPC• MCA
My Mobile Computing
• Palm V in 2000

Operating Systems
• Pocket PC = Windows Mobile– Windows Mobile Phone Edition– NOT Windows Mobile Smartphone Edition
• Palm Treo– Palm OS: 650, 680 or 700p– Windows Mobile: 700w
• OSX– Apple iPhone
• Google Android
Organise yourself
• Sync with Outlook– Add and read appointments– Reminders
• Keep emails on you for reference– Push Email – read emails as soon as you get
them
• Contacts– Keep and add contacts– Beaming
Downloading Medical Software
• Free PDA Reference Software– Diagnosaurus– Epocrates– Archimedes
• Buy PDA Textbooks– Skyscape– Unbound Medicine– PEPID– All specialties – most books now available– Searchable, hyperlinked, low-weight!
Archimedes
• Medical Calculator
• E.g.– BMI– GCS– Etc, etc
Oxford Handbook
• Standard handbook for UK house officers
• Example of a textbook on PDA
• Searchable• Includes pictures and
flow charts
Create Databases
• HanDBase
• Log Books
• Patient Lists
• Create any kind of database you like
Keep Up To Date
• Evidence Based Software– UpToDate– Inforetriever
• Pub Med on Tap• AvantGo• RSS Feeds• Browse the Web
Mobile Medicine 2.0
• Accessing live information vs storing software on the device
• Enables social networking applications
• Geographical positioning technology
• Adds new functions for social networking
• What are the medical applications of this?
Geo-Social Networking
• Mobile Phone Triangulation
• GPS– ZYB– Mocospace– Migg33– Limejuice
Web 2.0 Applications
• Google Apps
• Google Maps
Connected Medical Tools
• ePocrates
• Unbound Medicine
• Skyscape
Mobile EMRs
• LifeRecord
• iChart
Problem with PDAs
• Small screen size
• Difficulty data entry
• Not very powerful
• Can be expensive
• Poor usability?
Tablet PCs
• More suited for integration into Hospital Information Systems
• Many EHR programs offer Tablet PC support
• Especially useful for ward rounds and emergency rooms
• Also used by nursing and paramedical staff
MCAs – Mobile Clinical Assistants
• New specification by Intel
• Coalition of EHR companies
• Features:– Easy carry handle– RFID Reader– Bar-code Reader– Wipe clean
MCAs
• Motion Computing and Philips MCAs
In-Betweens
• UMPCs– Like Tablets but slightly
smaller– Lower specs
• Internet Tablets– Nokia– Useful for wireless
environment– Poor support from medical
software companies
Wireless• Allow PDAs/Smartphones/Tablets to access hospital systems and
the internet• Start using online resources:
– PubMed– Cochrane– Email
• Access to hospital record systems• VOIP / Bleep Replacement• Access to internet outside the hospital
– Virtual private networks– Email
• Communication between medical devices and monitoring equipment and mobile computing units.
Medical Devices
• MCA:– Barcode and RFID
• PDA– Spirometry– ECG– BM
Summary
• DIY• Less people are using PDAs but more Phones
have PDA capability• Tablets and MCAs have easier data entry• Rise of EMR and ePrescribing makes MCAs
more useful• Social Networking on Mobile Devices just
starting
Possible Medicine 2.0 Applications• Emergency department updates, providing a
continuous time line of events, flow of data and knowledge through the care period (it is longitudinal and searchable)
• Small social networks can be created for complicated patients who need close and careful follow-ups, doctors can be notified when lab results arrive
• Inform nurses and patients about your whereabouts and activities.
• Tweet Clouds could be utilised, in an instant to provide a snap shot of current admissions, current workload or case type issues for management.
• Support groups with various health conditions.• Ability to participate in "micro-consults" with patients.
