What’s this session about?
Why are we doing this?• What role do I have in the Catalyst movement?• What are the basic things I need to know to present?• What kind of questions will I get when presenting?• Let’s give it a try!
Why are we doing this?
Your role in the Catalyst movement:• Peer-to-peer messaging will grow the movement• The opportunity to reach your peers in a unique way• When YOU talk to your peers they will listen• If we all do our part, real change can happen
Presenting: The Basics
Structure
• Think of presentation as a story:
beginning, middle, and end
• Beginning: get audience’s attention • Middle: tell the story• End: tie everything together, ask for questions
Presenting: The Basics
Engage your audience• Hook ‘em with an intriguing fact or statistic• Tell interesting back stories • Share how tobacco has personally affected you• Show some emotion-why does this issue matter
to you?• Be yourself- be creative, funny, make it your own• Have fun!
Presenting: The Basics
Know the material• Prepare: thoroughly read the material, stay
updated on local news• Practice: in front of the mirror, your parents,
your dog, whoever’ll listen• Anticipate questions: find out answers to as
many questions as you can before you present. Never make up an answer
Other Tips
General reminders:• Relax-being nervous is okay• Visualize yourself giving the presentation• Concentrate on the message• Keep an eye on the audience• Encourage questions• Gain experience-experience builds confidence
Common questions
How do I answer these questions:– Do you smoke? Have you ever?– Why don’t they make cigarettes illegal?– What’s worse marijuana or cigarettes?– What’s worse chew tobacco or cigarettes?– Questions that start out with “I heard…”
Now what?
Where do I go from here:• Practice• Learn more, study, find out more• This is just the beginning• When will I get my my resources to start
presenting?
