Lifelong Learning in Cardiology

Education and lifelong learning are core to the European Society of Cardiology - ESC’s mission.

Supporting training in cardiology and Continuing Medical Education are commitments essential to the ESC Mission: “to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease in Europe”.

This brochure consolidates the activities of the ESC and its Constituent Bodies (National Cardiac Societies, Associations, Working Groups and Councils) in order to guide you through your Lifelong Learning, Continuing Medical Education (CME), Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Research needs.

Although the most traditional means of delivering CME activities remains live events (congresses & meetings), the ESC is responding more and more to its members’ requirements and focusing on distance learning as an increasingly convenient vehicle for CME and CPD.

All ESC educational activities, from publications to congresses, are structured around and mapped out on curricula (ESC Core Curriculum for general cardiology and subspecialty Curricula), hence ensuring sound education and lifelong learning. Increasingly, ESC Educational activities involve knowledge based assessment. This is becoming ever more systematic with distance learning products, and ultimately with the growing Certification activities of the ESC Associations and Working Groups.

The Specialty Centre of the European Society of Cardiology is a scientific knowledge centre in sub-specialties of Cardiology. The knowledge, training and expertise its members have gained via the ESC and its sub-specialties’ educational programmes are recognised and certified, consequently bringing about and promoting excellence in Cardiology in Europe and worldwide.

ESC eLearning Platform Version 1: the platform is a collaborative tool, involving ESC, ESC Associations & Working Groups and National Cardiac Societies. It aims at organising training in the sub-specialties of Cardiology around their curricula.

The knowledge module offers a wealth of content and courses, to help prepare for sub-specialty certification exams. The skills tracking module and professional modules complete the certification process, engaging local trainers throughout the training period, providing quality assurance to the local and European sign-off. In 2014, the ESC is launching a programme in general cardiology.

More on the ESC eLearning Platform: learn.escardio.org

Finally, the ESC is, and always has been, an advocate and supporter of research. Therefore, this guide will also provide you information on the variety of Research and Training Grants offered by the ESC and its Constituent Bodies each year.

All ESC educational programmes are, where appropriate, submitted to the European Board for Accreditation in Cardiology (EBAC) for CME/CPD accreditation. EBAC works in accordance with standard procedures established by the UEMS-EACCME.

Continuing Medical Education in Europe - Did you know?

• A CME credit is a unit of time that a physician spends attending a CME activity (1 CME = 1 hour in most cases)

• Collection of CME Credits is mandatory for Physicians in many European Countries (Austria. Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, United Kingdom).

• CME Credits can be collected for participation in live events, webinars, web courses, articles and CD-ROMs.

• Physicians can collect CME Credits at the National and European level.

• European CME Credits collected by American citizens can be converted to AMA Pra Category 1 Credit.

AMA: American Medical Association

CME: Continuing Medical Education

CPD: Continuing Professional Development

UEMS: Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes (European Union of Medical Specialists)

EACCME: European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education
