Even after the first few days in the studio, I felt a sense of

belonging. Credit this to the amazing support of the Tech Team,

and to the dedicated interest of the members of this newly

evolving community. The clean, orderly, spacious feel of the

room, the generous access to equipment—easels, tables, tools,

advice! This is a “working” environment, one which manages to

cultivate intense focus within an atmosphere of activity—busy,

yet respectfully non-intrusive.

In anticipation of our move to a new campus, Emily Carr is pleased to present Imagining Our Future, a series of events and activities that explore the geographical, historical, pedagogical and cultural context of our relocation to the False Creek Flats (Senákw).

Expansive, experimental and provocative, the series brings together practitioners from across a range of practices and fields of inquiry, evoking both radical and practical propositions for how we inhabit our new campus, and how we imagine the art, media and design university of the 21st century. This fall, you are invited to participate in public discussions, forums, activities and events, including:

Working Space (public discussion series): October – November, 2014

ENHANCED SKILLS3D DESIGN SKETCHINGSketching is an essential process in 3D design; it documents the flow of ideas and can be used as an effective tool for communication. In this course, you will explore pencil-sketching techniques commonly used in industrial design, interior design, furniture design, and architectural design. In this course you will apply design drawing techniques to the visualization of products, environ-ments, forms, and space.

Prerequisite: None

RAPID VISUALIZATION AND PRODUCT RENDERINGRapid visualization is a systematic and effective way to draw imaginary 3D objects and concepts, and is applicable to animation, communication design, industrial design, illustra-tion, architecture, furniture design, and interior design. It helps to expand visual thinking, create new ideas, communicate concepts and to solve design problems. This course introduces you to the methods, techniques and media to produce accurately proportioned freehand sketches and basic renderings. Principles of perspective, projection, light, shade, reflection and texture are examined, including demonstrations of approaches and techniques.

Prerequisite: Strong drawing skills with an enthusiasm for realism and detail

THE ART OF ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHYIn this course you will learn introductory techniques for architectural photography for both interior and exterior conditions. From lighting and framing, to preparing and setting up for the shoot, this course will balance demonstrations with hands-on assignments and location shoots. This course is ideal for someone who may want to consider commercial photography options such as real-estate or interior design, or someone who wants to better expand their creative vocabulary towards their own independent work.

Prerequisite: CEPH 141 Black-and-White Film Photography, CEPH 250 Introduction to Digital Photography, or equivalent

FUNDAMENTALS BASICS OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGNThis course introduces you to the fundementals of industrial design. In it, you will gain an awareness of the design process with an emphasis on design criteria. This will be followed by formulation of the design brief, development of creative concepts, user testing and quick model making. You will work on a design project through to completion of a full-scale model and a short design presentation.

Prerequisite: None

EXPLORATION OF 3D DESIGNThis course explores the principles of three-dimensional design through a variety of materials and processes. You will develop technical and conceptual skills in applying the concepts of space, mass, contrast, balance, scale and surface. You will create both functional and sculptural objects through projects that explore 3D concepts, forms and materials. The emphasis will be on hands-on problem solving and imaginative and experimental responses to proposed projects. This course is ideal for anyone wanting to explore dimensional considerations in their work.

Prerequisite: None

RAPID VISUALIZATION AND PRODUCT RENDERINGRapid visualization is a systematic and effective way to draw imaginary 3D objects and concepts, and is applicable to animation, communication design, industrial design, illustration, architecture, furniture design, and interior design.

SKILL BUILDINGINTRODUCTION TO MODEL MAKINGModels are 3D previews of designs before they go to production. They can serve as the proof-of-concept, be subjected to ergonomic testing, or they can be a sales tool. Through presentations, demonstrations, workshop practice and design projects, you will learn the fundamental techniques to fabricate mock-ups and models using block materials and sheet materials.

Prerequisite: Basic hand-tool skills and reasonable sketching ability

3D DESIGN SKETCHINGSketching is an essential process in 3D design; it documents the flow of ideas and can be used as an effective tool for communication. In this course, you will explore pencil-sketching techniques commonly used in industrial design, interior design, furniture design, and architec-tural design. You will apply design drawing techniques to the visualization of products, environments, forms and space.

BASICS OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNThis studio course introduces you to the design process as it applies to architecture and architectural space. Through idea generation, sketch models, proposal research and presentation and modeling techniques, you will interpret your ideas architecturally as you also explore the locational, contextual and structural aspects of architectural design. You will work on a site-specific design project individually and in teams.

Prerequisite: None

ARCHITECTURAL MODELING AND MAQUETTESThis studio course introduces you to architec-tural modeling from drawings. Through exercises and projects you will learn to read design drawings and build foam core models for architecture, interiors, landscape design or industrial design applications. INTRODUCTION TO MOLD DESIGN AND CASTINGThis intensive, hands-on introductory course explores the essential processes of plasterwork, mold making and casting with an emphasis on the subtleties of mold design and material tips and tricks. Molds, and the production of multiples, are a fundamental component of many sculptural processes and require a specific sequence of steps and attention to particular details for the creation of professional final results. Through a variety of linked assignments, you will develop an in-depth knowledge of plaster and related materials, their working characteristics and their appropriateness for casting particular types of shapes in various types of material (synthetic, organic or ceramic).

Prerequisite: None

SMALL-SCALE MODELINGExplore the fundamental techniques of modeling in this hands-on studio course. Using Plastalina and clay, you will be introduced to the additive process of modeling: the basic shape is blocked out and the surface form is built up gradually over the entire sculpture. Through demonstrations, exercises and projects you will learn how to create small-scale sculpture and relief sculpture using the basic sculptural elements of mass, space, plane, line, scale, movement and texture. Techniques and skills learned will appeal to animators, sculptors, potters, product designers and many others.

Prerequisite: None
