A care plan for the care giver
• Some parts are pretty some parts are not……
• The only thing that is any good when fried to a crisp is bacon
• There are two kinds of care workers…..
• Telling tales of survival
• Self Knowledge is the beginning of Self Care
Signs of burn out• Decreased energy levels - emotional and
physical. Tired in the morning• Withdrawing from people & places
(clients/colleagues/family) Ring tones & Rainy days
• Decreased productivity but not necessarily decreased activity. Piles of paper
• Difficult to concentrate or to care less and less. Boy with gun
• Difficult to reach decisions – almost impossible to implement.
Signs of burn out
• Physical symptoms, sleep & eating disturbances, ulcers, headaches catch a wake, changes in libido check
• Self defeating coping strategies, dockets ceiling drinking, eating 95 DVD’s
• Preoccupations/obsessions - admin, rules, areas
• Loss of courage and self worth, not able to initiate or take risks. Planning out the window
• Loose direction, feel aimless and dissatisfied job hopping (running) - depression
Signs of burn out
Contributing factors• Lots of responsibility and little control• Working in a rigid (failing) system • Superiors inattentive to personal
problems• Exposed to severe circumstances • Contact with victims and criminals• Overloaded • Bureaucratic paperwork. Grants • Role conflict damned if you do,
damned if you don't• Need to make decisions with little
time to think them through F36• Lack of recognition and reward
financial or otherwise
Then we make our own plans…..
• We can become angry or distracted the blame game
• We fix things ourselves – if I don’t do it, it wont get done
• Rigid thinking – my way or the high way
• Refuge in power not relationships I’ve got the power
• All or nothing thinking• Rigid boundaries• Meet each demand Yes• Just become plain difficult NO• Fall off the end of the world• Into the pit…
The pit
• Are you stuck in the burnout pit?• How did you get there?• ………………………………………………...• How are you surviving in there?• ………………………………………………...• What was different during the time you were
outside the pit?• ………………………………………………...• What skills, resources and support did you
have at that time?• ………………………………………………….• Name three things you think can do to get out
of the pit?• ………………………………………………….• ……………………………………………........
Monsters living in the pit
Recovery
• Rest and quality sleep off button• What you eat is what you get – nutrition
and balance chocolate• Exercise, moderate & sustainable kids• Time management, me time, slow it
down• Develop yourself, intellectually,
spiritually,• Connect to good relationships more
often• Work on your boundaries• ( ) (____) (------)
Self care plan
Take care of yourself• Implement RACE
• Plan your work and work your plan
• Don’t let anybody stop you
• If all else fails…
• Thank you
