Overview:

Over the past decade, major advances in the field of molecular biology, coupled with advances in genomic technologies e.g. Next Generation Sequencing, have led to an explosive growth in the biological information generation by researchers. This deluge of genomic information has, in turn, led to an absolute requirement for computer based databases to store, organise and index the data, and for specialised tools and algorithms to view and analyse the data. This has evolved into a new multidisciplinary field of research by combining biological sciences, mathematics, computer sciences and statistics, named as bioinformatics.

Bioinformatics involves the integration of computers, software tools, and databases in an effort to address biological questions. Bioinformatics approaches are often used for major initiatives that generate large data sets. Two important large-scale activities that use bioinformatics are genomics and proteomics. In addition to genomics and proteomics, there are many more areas of Biology where bioinformatics is being applied e.g. Metabolomics, Transcriptomics, Interactomics, Metagenomics and large scale comparative and evolutionary genomics studies. Each of these important areas aims to understand complex biological systems. Computer aided high throughput analysis using various bioinformatics tools and pipelines are required for

for processing such complex and large amount of Biological data in an effective and efficient manner.

Many scientists today refer to the next wave in Bioinformatics / Computational Biology as Systems Biology, an approach to tackle new and complex Biological questions. Systems Biology involves the integration of genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics information to create a whole system's view of a biological entity. So it is highly important for scientists and researchers working in these areas especially to develop a basic understanding and join an inter-disciplinary social network of experts in this area to address their versatile problems.

NIBGE is highly interested to promote such an inter-disciplinary platform; therefore, a collaborative effort has been made by computer and biological scientists. The workshop will have a focus on the end user, which are biologists, with the flavor of methods development, which makes it equally important for biologists, computer scientists, statisticians and mathematicians.
