Bone Cements are self curing cement like formulations which may or may not contain Antibiotics used for positioning and

securing of a metal or prosthesis to living bone.

Not a glue Mechanical bond Well secured to cancellous bone Lower Modulus of Elasticity Strength half of compact bone Withstand 3 times compression well. Fails under shear tension.

Liqiud Monomer-Methyl methacrylate Stabiliser-Hydroquinone, Ascorbic acid..

Ethyl Alcohol-Vehicle to enhance stabilisation of Asc Acid

Activator-N N dimethyl P toluidine

Powder component Polymethylmethacrylate Barium Sulphate Catalyst-Benzyl Peroxide

Metabolised to Methacrylic acid--- CO2 Bactericidal dec phagocytosis by monocyte Cardiotoxic

Heat of polymerisation-coagulation of protein

Occlusion of nutrient metaphyseal arteries and Bone necrosis

Cytotoxic lipolytic effects

Vasodilatation –dec BP Cardiovascular Toxicity Others— Thrombophlebitis ,Hemorrhage,^

wound infn.

Aseptic Loosening Osteolysis Acrylic cracking, Fragmentation.

Joint Replacements Limb Salvage in bone tumors Nuerosurgery and dental

Bone cement Liquid-Microfilter

Packs of liquid –Ethylene Oxide

Powder-Gamma Radiation

Ideal temp-23C Uniform mixing To reduce porosity- vaccum,

centrifugation Apply in doughy state Dry fresh glove, dry the surface. Applicn-digital,cement gun, syringe. Pressurisation till setting.

It decreases fatigue strength Should be in powdered form Heat stable Eg. Genta, tobra, cephalosporins

Colouring agents to detect cement during revision.

CONTRAINDICATIONS Hypersensitivity reaction Infections Mysthenia grevis Children
