Introduction Assignment: Kevin and Shirley

Health and Safety:

To keep the computer safe I had to use an anti-static wrist band and place the computer on an anti-static this is because if I generated static I could have damaged small components in the computer.

Before I put the anti-static wrist band on I had to take off any watches, rings or any other kind of jewellery on my hand or arm. Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is when two objects come into contact. ESD first requites a build-up of an electrostatic charge. This occurs when two different materials rub together. One of them becomes positively

charged; the other becomes negatively. This mat and wristband prevent the negative and positive charges coming into contact. This protects all the little components in the computer that could be easily damaged by static electricity.

Setting Up the System:

To first task I had to do was install the RAM and the

CD Drive. To install the RAM (Random Access Memory) I had to first place the PC on an anti-static mat and use and anti-static wristband. To stop any hardware being damaged by static electricity. To install the

RAM I have to slide the chip into the required slot and closed the handles that hold it into space. To install the CD/DVD Drive I had to first move the front of the PC to be able to place the CD/DVD Drive into the

case and slide it on a pivot into the PC and then plug the needed wires into the back of it. To install the keyboard I had to put the PS/2 keyboard and mouse into the PS/2 port in the back of the PC.

Customising the PC:

One of the tasks I have been given for Bob and Shirley’s PC was to customise it for them. I would have to make sure the date and time is correct, make sure the language was correct make a large font and icons, change the mouse so Shirley can use it because she is left handed. I also must change the background to a picture of Shirley’s family. First of all I changed Shirley’s background to the photo she gave me of her family. To do this I went into her pictures and right clicked on the picture of her family, I then chose the option ‘set as desktop background’. This set the picture as her background. The time and language was already correct when I configured the computer before starting it up. I had to configure the mouse for Shirley’s left handedness so I did this by selecting Control Panel>Printers and other Hardware> Mouse properties and I changed the mouse buttons around for Shirley because she is left handed.

The next task I chose to do for Shirley is changing the font size and the icons to extra-large for her had eyesight. I did this by changing the appearance of the screen and chose the ‘large icons’ option. I changed the font size for to extra-large so that everything would be easier to read. I did this by changing the display properties on the control panel and changed the font from normal. This also changes the screen resolution to make everything larger for get as her eyesight isn’t very good. I have also been asked to set up folders for Shirley and Bob; these folders include: Family photos, holiday photos, recipes,

miscellaneous documents, word documents, spreadsheets and databases. To do this I first created a folder in Shirley’s documents called Photos. I did this by right clicking in the documents and selecting create new folder. I then did the same with adding in recipes, databases, word documents and all of the others I have been asked to

include.

Windows Office 2003: First of all I installed Windows Office 2003 onto the computer using the hardware wizard. I installed Office but putting in the Microsoft office 2003 disk and opening it up when it appear in ‘My Computer’. After opening up the disk I followed all of the instructions such as choosing which folder to save all of the data in and putting in the key to prove that I had actually bought the program. I was then also told to create desktop icons so that it would be easier for Shirley to get onto Excel, Word and Access. I did this easily by going on all programs and finding the windows folder then all I had to do was right click the program and chose ‘Create

Shortcut’ this then created a short cut to Excel, Word and Access which I could just then drag straight to the desktop for Shirley. These also had large icons because I already changed that in the control pannel settings. I had also been asked to add Excel, Word and Access to the task bar so it would be easy to start up even if you weren’t on the desktop. I just did this by dragging each program next to the start bar so they would attach to it straight away. I was also asked to customise word in any way that would help Shirley and her family. I did this by changing all of the icons on Microsoft word to large so they all would be easy to see.

Anti-Virus Protection:Installing AVG:~To install AVG I first placed the AVG disk into the disk drive. After this it started up with the start-up wizard. Once I followed the recommended

settings I could use the program and it appeared for me to open.

One of the tasks I have also been given is to install an anti-virus protection software. Some of the requirement I have for it is that it needs to run

scans at regular intervals, automatically heal/remove infections, report potentially unwanted programs and spyware threats and scan for tracking cookies, scan the system environment and to scan at least

the C drive. To set up the scheduled scan I had to open AVG click options and open the advanced settings and open the scheduled scan under the schedule tab option. I set the scan for 12:00 PM every Monday and Friday. AVG also automatically heals and repairs infections, report potentially unwanted programs and it automatically scans the system for cookies, system environment and it scans at least the C drive.

Maintenance tasks:

I have been asked by Kevin to complete and preform the following tasks such as defragging the C Drive and set up a scheduled defrag as well as delete temporary Internet files, delete

cookies and auto schedule the

deletion of unwanted data. First of all I deleted all of the original internet history I did this by opening up the Internet Explorer making my way to the history tab and I

right clicked onto ‘Todays’ history and chose the delete option. Kevin also asked me to defrag the C drive and set up a schedule scan, I first of all did this by going onto the control panel and “Rearrange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster”. This then opens a defragging option with will make programs run faster when you open them. I also set up a schedule defrag to take

place every Saturday. I deleted the cookies on the computer so none of Kevin’s previous data from websites is saved. I deleted the cookies by going onto the Internet options and choosing to delete all cookies from the temporary Internet files. I have been asked to replace the toner cartridge in the printer and replace a broken mouse for the computer. I replaced the toner by taking it out of the printer and putting a new cartridge in. I also got a new mouse and replaced it with the old broken one.

Bios:I was assigned to change the bios settings so that the monitor would turn off after 10 minutes and the computer would sleep after 30 minutes. I have also been asked to adjust the BIOS settings so that when a USB device or the mouse it powered up then the computer will start up. I did this by pressing F10 when the computer is starting up and putting in the correct password for the bios. I then changed he bios settings so that whenever the computer has gone into

hibernation mode if Shirley moves the mouse or another usb devise the computer will load back up.
