It’s his voice she hearsShe wept tears of joy

On the day when he married her

Doesn’t seem that long ago

But it’s been forty years

Since the night he first carried her

In through their own bedroom door

It’s his voice she hearsExcept for that stint that he did in the army

She hasn’t spent one night alone

Now she moves in a daze through her daily routine

Waiting for him to come home

It’s his voice she hears in the hallway

His step she hears on the stair

Standing beside her like always

But nobody’s there

He’s still alive in her heart

Where he’s been all of these years

In her mind, every time there’s a sound

Today when she buried him

She can’t believe that it’s true

And nothing seemed real

As she watched his friends carry him

Now she’s not sure what to do

Friends always say she looks young for her age
