The Dayton Foundation: FY15 Discretionary Grants

Dayton Playhouse, Inc. I Stage ImprovementsThe grant will help in upgrading the Playhouse’s 25-year-old building, including replacing the stage floor and theater drapes, as well as improve the fly system.

Amount granted: $20,000

Dayton Contemporary Dance Company I Moving Toward ExcellenceThe Dayton Contemporary Dance Company’s (DCDC) Moving Toward Excellence program supports literacy instruction for first and second graders. The grant supported classroom lessons on literacy, which culminated in a DCDC performance for more than 2,000 students in the Dayton Public Schools.

K12 Gallery & TEJAS I AP Studio Art CourseK12 Gallery & TEJAS is offering a new AP Studio Art 2D course for high school juniors and seniors who are advanced art students. The course will prepare students for the rigors of college while creating a professional art portfolio. The grant will be used to support scholarships for students who require financial assistance to pay the course tuition.

Alzheimer’s Association I Dementia Coaching ProjectThe Alzheimer’s Association’s Dementia Coaching project is an evidence-based program that has been shown to reduce hospital readmissions and emergency room visits, delay nursing home placement and improve caregiver well-being. The grant will help launch this program in the Dayton area.

Advocates for Basic Legal Equality I Immigration Legal Assistance ProgramThe grant supports a new program that will assist local immigrants in completing immigration relief applications and conduct outreach efforts to help protect them from scams involving fraudulent services.

Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley I Pantry Improvement ProjectThe grant supports the final phase of the Pantry Improvement Project, which will include additional classroom space, confidential consultation areas and larger refrigeration capacity to serve Greater Dayton residents who seek emergency food assistance.

Amount granted: $40,000

CityWide Development Corporation I DaVinci Children’s GardenThe grant supports the creation of a public children’s garden on a one-acre site along Valley Street as a part of the DaVinci comprehensive community development project.

Amount granted: $50,000

Family Violence Prevention Center of Greene County I Maintenance and Safety ImprovementsThe grant will match support from the State of Ohio for much-needed capital improvements and repairs to the housing shelter’s floor, roof and security system.

Amount granted: $19,000

The Foodbank I Improving Operations and Safely Feeding FamiliesThe grant was used to purchase two new electric-powered forklifts, allowing the organization to better serve the community by making it easier for staff to safely and efficiently move food and fill orders in the warehouse.

Amount granted: $13,612

Hannah’s Treasure Chest I 2015 Organizational ExpansionThe grant will be used for the expansion of operations, including adding warehouse space, increasing hours of operation, and hiring a full-time volunteer coordinator and a part-time community resource coordinator.

Amount granted: $20,107

Kids in New Directions (KIND) I Technology ExpansionThe grant will be used to improve internet accessibility for online academic tutoring programs and to purchase additional academic and donor management software programs to better serve youth participating in KIND’s after-school program for at-risk, under-served children in East Dayton.

Amount granted: $8,900

Miami Valley Boy Scouts of America I Boy Scouts STEM InitiativeThe grant will help fund a new STEM Center deck where outdoor activities and STEM activities join to create an inclusive STEM experience.

Amount granted: $50,000

St. Vincent de Paul Society I Administrative Office MoveThe grant will be used to cover technical costs associated with moving the organization’s administrative offices to the Gateway Shelter for Women and Families to help generate additional revenue for the organization.

Amount granted: $19,600

Wesley Community Center I Dayton Cooks!The grant will be used to support the new Dayton Cooks! Program, a partnership between The Wesley Community Center and Grace United Methodist Church. The program helps move underemployed and unemployed low-income individuals with a passion for culinary arts into employment by providing professional food service training to them at no cost.

Amount granted: $37,500

The Woman’s Club of Dayton Foundation I Steele Manor Society Capital CampaignThe grant will help the organization make energy-efficiency improvements to the 225 North Ludlow Street building in order to reduce operating costs and expand future use of the facility.

Amount granted: $15,000

WYSO Public Radio I Youth Radio Training at WYSO Public RadioThe grant supports the WYSO Youth Radio program that equips Montgomery County high school students with the skills to write, record and edit their own radio documentaries, which are shared with WYSO listeners.

Amount granted: $2,900

Yellow Springs Home, Inc. I Cemetery Street ProjectThe grant will be used to support the Cemetery Street Project, a partnership with Yellow Springs Home Inc. and the village of Yellow Springs to create homeownership opportunities for low-income, first-time homebuyers.

Amount granted: $30,000

YWCA of Dayton I Renovating Lives Floor by FloorThe grant will support renovations to the domestic violence shelter, which include increasing security features, expanding administrative offices to include space for housing specialists and updating apartments used to house victims of domestic violence.
