What is Poverty??

• “The state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions”

• -Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary• Poverty rates are often high in LDCs and Third World

Countries• About 50% of the world is earning less than $2.50 per day• 80% of the world is earning less than $10 per day

Our Entrepreneur: Bill and Melinda Gates

• Started the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 1997• Bill and Melinda Gates want to improve the welfare of

communities worldwide, by specifically helping to improve the lives of the impoverished and the underprivileged. They say that they would like to “help every person get the chance to live a healthy, productive life”

• Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, gave up his job as CEO to work full time in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Our Entrepreneur: Bill and Melinda Gates

• Gates Health• One way they help the underprivileged is through medical help such as Vaccine

Delivery, giving HIV aid and giving Malaria aid

• Global Development Division• Aims to identify and fund solutions that help people lift themselves out of poverty

• Global Policy and Advocacy Division• Around the Globe, they promote public policies that work, forging ties with

governments to implement them, and creating public awareness of these policies.

Lessons Learnt

• We have learnt that we are very privileged to be able to live in homes and have food to eat, as many people around the world are unable to have these privileges

• We are also very thankful for our parents who work and provide us with an opportunity to have an education
