Today’s MomsMany mothers envision themselves sitting around their kitchen table with their family each night enjoying a home-cooked meal they prepared for their loved ones. Although many mothers dream of doing this, they just can’t find the time or energy to do so.

The Dream Dinners franchise was founded on the idea of bringing families together around the dinner table. Studies show that families eating together can have profound impacts upon the family unit and the success of young children as they mature. Well, what if we were to tell you that eating home-cooked meals with your family five nights a week had a positive impact not only on your children, but on parents as well? Dining out or delivery may be more convenient for some parents, but the benefits of eating regular, in-home meals outweigh the added steps of preparing home cooked meals.

Below, Dream Dinners franchise reviews six reasons why your families should eat dinner together regularly.

A Harvard Study found that children who eat, on average, five meals a week with their family had healthier eating habits than those who didn’t - eating more fruits, vegetables and juice. These results aren’t only found in the home. These same children also had better eating habits when they ventured outside of their house, too. In fact, a recent study in Pediatrics, the official journal of The American Academy of Pediatrics, showed that eating regular family meals can make a child less likely to become obese, more likely to be a healthy weight and less likely to develop an eating disorder. All of these factors can have positive long-term effects on a child and their development.

1. Enhanced Nutrition

Sitting down with your family allows for children to be exposed to real-world conversations in an open environment. When a child has the opportunity to listen to his or her parents speak about current issues they are exposed to a wider vocabulary and often improve their language skills in the process. Similarly, creating a safe environment to communicate daily at dinner can help a child find his or her voice. Engaging in thoughtful, casual conversation around the dinner table can help a child refine his or her unique opinions and teach them how to express them. This can teach a child to listen without interrupting and allows them to chime in when they wish, teaching that their opinion is of value.

2. Improved Language and Listening Skills

A study by Columbia University’s Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) found that among teenagers who eat dinner with their families five or more nights a week, 86 percent reported that they had never tried smoking compared to just 65 percent who reported eating two or fewer family meals a week. The same study found that teens who ate dinner with their family five or more nights a week were less likely to have tried marijuana and alcohol.

3. Decreased Risk of Harmful Behaviors

That same CASA study found that teens who ate dinner with their family five or more nights a week were more likely to do better in school. In fact, the report showed that of children who ate with their family fewer than three nights a week, 20 percent got grades of C’s or lower on their report card compared to just 9 percent who ate frequently with their family. Getting good grades in school can help set a child up for a bright future, so implementing regular family meals can be a great place to start for parents who have strong expectations of their children.

4. Perform Better in School

Studies show that the typical American family spends over 40 percent of their monthly food budget on meals outside of the home but eating out only accounts for 30 percent of their meals. The discrepancy between the cost of eating out and eating at home can clearly be seen. Per-person cost of a meal at a local restaurant totals on average $8 compared to just $4.50 when eating at home. Yep, you can cut a meal price in half just by dining at home.

5. Added Cost Savings

It’s understandable that the thought of crafting up a family meal each night of the week may seem stressful, but a recent study by Brigham Young University found that sitting down to a family meal actually helped mothers reduce stress and tension from long hours at work. Gathering around the dinner table for a healthy meal and friendly conversation can do wonders to bring down a mother’s stress level by reminding them of the importance of family.

6. Healthy Stress-Reliever

The benefits of eating family meals are pretty clear, but not all mothers or fathers have time to prepare a fully nutritious meal each night. Between working a 9-5, picking up their kids from their activities and juggling all other tasks that come with parenthood and running a stable home, it’s hard to find time to make a home-cooked meal to enjoy with your family and as a result, many parents resort to take-out or dining out.

Here’s where Dream Dinners franchise can help. Each Dream Dinners franchise location aims to help working mothers provide a family meal each night to reap these benefits by inviting them to pre-assemble their family meals so they can enjoy this family time around the dinner table. This can help take the hassle out of preparing a home-cooked meal each night, lessening a mother’s stress level in the process.
