The name “BARIR” , was derived from Kalashwarword ‘ Biric’ synonym of kahawar ‘Saric’
means bringing /collecting things from outside the area.Mostly goods were imported from other areas into the valley so it was named Barir.Some solidersinto the valley so it was named Barir.Some solidersfrom the forces of Alexender seprated due to some differences and came to Chitral.Some people came from Nooristan,Afghanistan due to a disastrous flood over there.After the end of Kalash rule and establishment of Raees rule,the Kalash tribes migrated to outskirts i.e Birir,Bambureute and Ranbur from Chitral town.
“BARIR VALLEY” one of the three valleys of ” KALASH” ,is located between 35° 40° and 35° 45° North latitude and 71° 35° and 71° 40°’ East longitude and elevation ranging from approximately 1,800m to 3,800 m above sea level.Thevalley lies in the lower part of district Chitral,in the southern gorges of Hindukush Mountain range in KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA province,PAKISTAN.The valley is connected with Nuistan Afghanistan in the province,PAKISTAN.The valley is connected with Nuistan Afghanistan in the south-west.Administratively,Kalash valleys come under Union Council “AYUN” ,Tahsil and district Chitral.
Barir valley is also one of the Community Conserved Area ,which has no legal cover like all other Community Conserved Areas in the country.There have been no no interventions,which have been designed for mitigating the negative impacts on the areas.Perhaps,the basic reason is the absence of any comprehensive long-term strategy addressing the issues by talking account of social ,economic,environment and ,management issues.
