Challenges Limited investments in education enhancing people’s reliance
on forests Limited investments in local physical infrastructure (roads,
communications…) limiting access to lucrative markets Limited financial streams for local development initiatives
limiting adoption of sustainable harvesting and higher quality production technologies (and “time” effective)
Lack of supportive policies, standards, infrastructures (laboratories,..), trade related requirements (i.e. procedures for exporting individual NTFP)
…
Can NTFP help reduce DD?
Yes, but … Need to reach more people – scaling up! No single model for REDD+ in a given location so..
Moribane: Tourism, Honey, Conservation agriculture;Looking into local fruits, teas, medicinal plants,..
Working with government and local communities to explore other avenues for reducing people’s reliance on forest land and resources (The role of the orange economy??)
We need to bring more investment to enhance Mozambique’s ability to address DD
RecommendationsWishing us successful interactions during COP 21
Obrigada!!
