DESCRIPTION

Water is a transparent fluid which forms the world's streams, lakes, oceans and rain, and is the major constituent of the fluids of living things. As a chemical compound, a water molecule contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms that are connected by covalent bonds. Water is a liquid at standard ambient temperature and pressure, but it often co-exists on Earth with its solid state, ice; and gaseous state, steam (water vapor). Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface. It is vital for all known forms of life. On Earth, 96.5% of the planet's water is found in seas and oceans, 1.7% in groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and the ice caps of Antarctica and Greenland, a small fraction in other large water bodies, and 0.001% in the air as vapor, clouds (formed of solid and liquid water particles suspended in air), and precipitation. Only 2.5% of the Earth's water is freshwater, and 98.8% of that water is in ice and groundwater. Less than 0.3% of all freshwater is in rivers, lakes, and the atmosphere, and an even smaller amount of the Earth's freshwater (0.003%) is contained within biological bodies and manufactured products. Water on Earth moves continually through the water cycle of evaporation and transpiration (evapotranspiration), condensation, precipitation, and runoff, usually reaching the sea. Evaporation and transpiration contribute to the precipitation over land. Water used in the production of a good or service is known as virtual water. Safe drinking water is essential to humans and other lifeforms even though it provides no calories or organic nutrients. Access to safe drinking water has improved over the last decades in almost every part of the world, but approximately one billion people still lack access to safe water and over 2.5 billion lack access to adequate sanitation. There is a clear correlation between access to safe water and gross domestic product per capita. However, some observers have estimated that by 2025 more than half of the world population will be facing water-based vulnerability. A report, issued in November 2009, suggests that by 2030, in some developing regions of the world, water demand will exceed supply by 50%.Water plays an important role in the world economy, as it functions as a solvent for a wide variety of chemical substances and facilitates industrial cooling and transportation. Approximately 70% of the fresh water used by humans goes to agriculture.

IntroductionEarth “the blue planet” has a lot of water.

Most of the planets surface is covered with water.

But less than 5 % of that water is fresh and much of that is locked up in ice sheets or far underground .

That is why we should save water wastage as much as possible. In this ppt we will learn a lot about water.

What is Water ??• Water is a liquid which can be used by humans

for various purposes like – drinking , bathing , cooking etc. A man can live without food for 3 – 4 weeks but without water he can live for only about 3 days.

• Water can be found in three forms – Solid, Liquid and Gas.

• 70 % of the Earth is water. Thus it appears blue from the space

Where do we get our water from ??• There are several sources of water in the world.

For instance, we get our water from reservoirs, dams, catchments, lakes and rivers

• These days people prefer to buy packaged or bottled water. Bottled or Table water can come from underground springs and wells or taps. It is purified before it is bottled. Natural Mineral Water and Spring water are types of underground water that contain naturally-occurring minerals. The world drinks over 150 billion litres of bottled water every year enough to fill 60,000 Olympic size pools.

Water Problems• As only about 1% of the water found on

Earth can be used by humans, water should be conserved as much as possible. The US alone wastes more than 10% of fresh water. Many scientists fear that if we go on using water at this rate the future generations would be left with no water at all which will result in millions of deaths

Continued….• Tsunamis - A tsunami is a series of water

waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water, generally an ocean or a large lake. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions (including detonations of underwater nuclear devices), landslides, glacier calvings, meteorite impacts and other disturbances above or below water all have the potential to generate a tsunami.

Hydroelectricity• Hydroelectricity is the term referring

to electricity generated by hydropower; the production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water. It is the most widely used form of renewable energy, accounting for 16 percent of global electricity generation – 3,427 terawatt-hours of electricity production in 2010, and is expected to increase about 3.1% each year for the next 25 years. Hydropower is produced in 150 countries, with the Asia-Pacific region generating 32 percent of global hydropower in 2010. China is the largest hydroelectricity producer, with 721 terawatt-hours of production in 2010, representing around 17 percent of domestic electricity use.

Did you know???• More than 3.4 million people die each year from water,

sanitation, and hygiene-related causes. Nearly all deaths, 99 percent, occur in the developing world.

• Lack of access to clean water and sanitation kills children at a rate equivalent of a jumbo jet crashing every four hours.

• Of the 60 million people added to the world's towns and cities every year, most move to informal settlements (i.e. slums) with no sanitation facilities.

• "[The water and sanitation] crisis claims more lives through disease than any war claims through guns."

• An American taking a five-minute shower uses more water than the average person in a developing country slum uses for an entire day.
