Presenting a proposal to provide clean and safe drinking water in

Third World Countries

Page 2: Drinking water purification proposal

Problem statement

• In most Third World countries, water from the tap is not safe for drinking as the water is not rid of bacteria and viruses in the final filtration process.

Solution

• To provide a bio-sand water filter capable of providing safe drinking water getting rid of 99% of bacteria and viruses.

• The design of the bio-sand filter is based on the integration of the time-tested process of slow sand filtration.

Benefits

• Convenient in-home, point-of-use filtration.• Dramatically reduces diarrhea, as well as skin and

urinary tract infections.• Works for all microbiologically contaminated

water.• Simple to operate.• Parts do not need replacing.• Saves wood/fuel needed for boiling water.• Significantly reduces household labor burdens

associated with securing clean water.• Significantly reduces household expenses needed

to purchase clean water.

Features of Bio-sand Filter• The BioSand Water Filter removes 98-9% of viruses and bacteria

with a fully developed biolayer and has been shown to reduce diarrhea by 47%.

• Flow rate is 0.4 litre per minute.

• Addition of 2 or 3 drops of chlorine should be recommended for post treated water.

The filter removes most of the harmful parasites, bacteria and viruses in the water with a fully formed bio-layer, but not all. People with deficient immune systems and especially children under 5 years of age, could still become ill. The addition of chlorine to the filtered water will kill the remaining bacteria that survive the filter, but, more importantly, chlorine prevents the recontamination of stored water that naturally occurs, particularly in higher temperatures.

Cont’d…

• It can treat water from ponds, lakes, cisterns, reservoirs, rivers, streams, shallow and deep wells.

• It can treat rain water, spring water, water from piped systems, delivered water and grey water.

• Always use the cleanest water source possible and, if possible, try to always use the same water source.

Specifications

• Height : 30.5 inches • Diameter : 16.5 inches• Weight Empty : 3.6 kg Filled with sand : 63.5 kg• Filtering capacity : 47 litres per hour• Preparation time : takes 2 to 3 weeks to

form the natural bio-layer in the filter.

Cost of Filter• The cost of the filter excluding the 3 types of sand required is USD

70.

• Cost of the 3 types of sand to be sourced locally is estimated to be USD 30. (As the weight of the sand is about 60 kg, the cost of transporting the sand should be considered.)

• The filter can be used up to 10 years with a filtering rate of 47 litres per hour.

• Assuming the cost of the filter to be USD 100 for up to 5 years and 8 hours daily, the cost per litre will be only 0.00146 cent !

• In Indonesian Rupiah terms, it will be only 2 rupiahs per litre !
