Bengaluru 2nd Only to Delhi in Kids Suffering Poor LungHealth
BENGALURU:After Delhi, Bengaluru is the most polluted city in the country, a survey coveringchildren has revealed.
The study, conducted across the nation’s metros, found 21 per cent children in Delhi sufferingfrom poor lung capacity, followed by 14 per cent in Bengaluru.
Around 35 per cent of schoolgoing children in India sufferfrom poor lung health, according to a recentlyreleased survey titled BreatheBlue. The nationwide surveyrevealed that children in Delhiare the worst affected.
A good 36 per cent ofBengaluru’s children areaffected, too, with 14 per centhaving poor lung capacity and
22 per cent with bad lung capacity.
Among 40 per cent of Delhi’s children, 21 per cent have poor lung capacity and 19 per cent badlung capacity. The survey included 2,000 school students in the age group of 814 from all partsof the country.
R Shankar, president of an NGO called Heal Foundation, said, “We are almost close to Delhi inthe quality of polluted air. If something is not done, we will soon catch up with Delhi.”
The survey was carried out in bad traffic areas of Bengaluru. Areas with dense traffic, such asHebbal Flyover, Dairy Circle, and Bannerghatta Road house many schools. “Children are thecitizens of tomorrow. Their quality of life will be affected and life spans shortened because ofdecreased lung capacity. It is high time we took stringent measures to clean up our air,” he said.
Dr Vaman Acharya, chairman, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, said, “We can monitorand direct other agencies. But, we cannot clean the air. That is the nature of the board.”
Poor Lung Health: City 2nd Only to Delhi
He suggested measures that would help the city better its air quality. “We demand that theregistration of new vehicles in the city be stopped. We cannot have more vehicles,” he said.
With a population of around 1.2 crore and more than 50 lakh vehicles, of which 40 lakh are twowheelers, Bengaluru is groaning under many problems, including acute water shortage and risingair and sound pollution.
Tests can tell how the lungs are doing. “The Lung Health Screening Test determines how muchair the lungs can hold, how quickly one can move air in and out, and how well the lungs takeoxygen in and remove carbon dioxide from the body. The tests can detect lung diseases andmeasure the severity of lung problems,” said Dr Komarla Nagendra Prasad, senior allergist andimmunologist.
