The study, conducted across the nation’s metros, found 21 per cent children in Delhi suffering from poor lung capacity, followed by 14 per cent in Bengaluru. Around 35 per cent of school going children in India suffer from poor lung health, according to a recently released survey titled Breathe Blue. The nationwide survey revealed that children in Delhi are the worst affected. A good 36 per cent of Bengaluru’s children are affected, too, with 14 per cent having poor lung capacity and 22 per cent with bad lung capacity. Among 40 per cent of Delhi’s children, 21 per cent have poor lung capacity and 19 per cent bad lung capacity. The survey included 2,000 school students in the age group of 814 from all parts of the country. R Shankar, president of an NGO called Heal Foundation, said, “We are almost close to Delhi in the quality of polluted air. If something is not done, we will soon catch up with Delhi.” The survey was carried out in bad traffic areas of Bengaluru. Areas with dense traffic, such as Hebbal Flyover, Dairy Circle, and Bannerghatta Road house many schools. “Children are the citizens of tomorrow. Their quality of life will be affected and life spans shortened because of decreased lung capacity. It is high time we took stringent measures to clean up our air,” he said. Dr Vaman Acharya, chairman, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, said, “We can monitor and direct other agencies. But, we cannot clean the air. That is the nature of the board.” Poor Lung Health: City 2nd Only to Delhi He suggested measures that would help the city better its air quality. “We demand that the registration of new vehicles in the city be stopped. We cannot have more vehicles,” he said. With a population of around 1.2 crore and more than 50 lakh vehicles, of which 40 lakh are two wheelers, Bengaluru is groaning under many problems, including acute water shortage and rising air and sound pollution. Tests can tell how the lungs are doing. “The Lung Health Screening Test determines how much air the lungs can hold, how quickly one can move air in and out, and how well the lungs take oxygen in and remove carbon dioxide from the body. The tests can detect lung diseases and measure the severity of lung problems,” said Dr Komarla Nagendra Prasad, senior allergist and immunologist.
