The close up shot represents the tension and intimacy between the two characters.

Her hat seems to be hiding her, showing a feeling of insecurity or uncomfortableness Maud feels in the relationship between the man and her. Furthermore the style of the hat, shadows Maud showing her insignificance or lack of power over the man.

The camera angle and angle of the shot, suggests the man in the image holds power and authority over Maud as he is leaning into her threateningly and also seems to be higher up in the shot-looking down on Maud further highlighting his authority.

Maud’s face is turning away from the man showing an uncomfortableness in their relationship which differs from the relationship between the two women.

The two mid shots are cross dissolved to give a sense of gentleness. This, along with the soft, low-key lighting and calm music encourage the audience to see the ‘relationship’ in a positive way. This contrasts the use of harsh jump cuts and sinister music when the male character is introduced; we are supposed to view Maude’s anti-social desire for the finger smith more positively than an arranged marriage to him.

The hat falling off suggests the man taking away the women's protection (hat covers her from the sun and gives her privacy). This gives an idea of who is in power in the relationship and the inequality and destructiveness present in the relationship.
