Music Magazine Analysis

Page 2: Presentation1[1]

Masthead: “NME” Bold and easy to read. It is also eye-catching. This is helped by the user of a white outline around the edge, giving it a glowing effect. Also the text has been bevelled to make it look official. The red on the black background makes it stand out and even more eye-catching.

The Main Sell Line: Green Day are the centre piece of the magazine and therefore the sell line is around them. It is in massive writing so you can see it easier. Also “Green Day” Is written in the colour green as well as everything associated with the band, “Tracks”, “live” and “Billie Joe(lead singer)” Also Green Day are the stand out words which immediately catches the readers eye and if they are green day fans will encourage them to buy it.

Main Image: Is of the lead singer of Green Day. He is holding his guitar in the air which is a symbol of status and power. It also shows leadership which fits perfectly with the main story of “Billie Joe plots comeback” He is holding up his guitar in the vertical position which is a sign of rebellion and anarchy

Plugs: The band names are in bold red so they are eye-catching. Also they are well known and have massive fan bases. As well as quotes and snippets from the interview. In the top corner we see a preview of another article in the magazine which shows us about the NME awards.

Colour scheme: Black and red which can be associated with rock and punk. Also it attracts the grunch and rock fans to the magazine. Also the massive amount of green is a link to the band green day.

Page 3: Presentation1[1]

Masthead: “MOJO” is in white which can indicate class and maturity. Also the font used is quite old school again linking to the maturity and class of the magazine. The white colouring makes it stand out from the background.

Main picture: The main picture of Paul McCartney shows him with a very powerful facial expression. Which gives him the appearance of arrogance and wisdom. Also the fact he is covering some of the title shows him being better and bigger than the magazine.

Main sell line: The main sell lines are primarily in block capitals and therefore it makes out like it is huge news in the music industry. Also “Battered. Slandered. Unbowed.” stand out as they are in white and sums up what Paul McCartney is about and what the interview will be based around. The two main peoples names are coloured differently to highlight there importance.

Plugs: All the names of the people in music are coloured in brown to show there importance much like the sell lines. Also the plugs are short and snappy so they can some up the newspaper quickly.

Colour scheme: The colour scheme is dull. And uses colours that don’t make it stand out compared to something like NME or KERRANG. Also the magazine is for people who are regular buyers of the magazine which is why they don’t use bright colours.

Page 4: Presentation1[1]

Masthead: “KERRANG” is written in big bold capital letters to give it an eye-catching effect. The font is interesting as it is cracked. This is clever as the magazine itself promotes rock music and this may be linked to loud music hence cracking the title.

Main sell line: “30 seconds to mars” is written across the middle of the magazine so it stands out. It is written in white behind a black background so it stands out. The bold capitals emphasis this even further drawing the readers eye to the magazine and forcing them to take

Main Image: The picture is taken as if they are leaning in and looking at you. This makes the band seem powerful and strong. Also it makes it look like they are addressing the reader. There body language is confident and cocky therefore making them seem interesting.

Plugs: The plugs are small as there is so much going on in the magazine and also they are squeezed to the side as the main image and sell line take up most of the magazine. They are written in bright colours so they still draw the readers eye to them

Colour scheme: The magazine uses bright colours to attract readers to buy it. also it helps the images stand out more compared to something like MOJO which doesn’t.

Contents: The word contents is written in big, white letters to show it is the contents page. It is written in an abstract style so people look at it.

Features and fashion are the other two words on the contents page. This sums up what the magazine is about in two words. This will either bring the reader in and make them read the magazine or make them put the magazine down and move onto something else.

Main image: the main image of the women is clever as it draws your eyes to her due to the provocative position she is in. This makes the reader want to know more about who she is and will therefore read the magazine. Her legs are in the shape of a V which is why there is also a V behind her.

Colour scheme: the colour scheme is black and grey in the background. This helps the image and the writing stand out more and look more effective on the page. The colour particularly flatters the image as it make you look at her body and looks.

Page 6: Presentation1[1]

The Main focus on this contents page is on the word “DRUMMER” which bursts out of the page at you. It is written in Big, Black font to stand out. Also we see the word “contents” at the top of the page which stands out as it is written in white on a white background. This sticks in your mind and stands out.

Main Images: Most of the images feature Drums which is logical as the magazine is called drummer. We also see pictures with numbers on them to tell the reader where they can read about the band or singer. The central image is of a famous drummer who will be the primary focus off the magazine.

Writing: The writing and numbers are in two different colours so its really easy to differentiate between the two. Also the writing which is in bold black writing makes the article stand out.

Colour scheme: The primary colours used on the page are red and black as these two colours best complement the rest of the page and make the images stand out more and also makes the writing more noticeable.

Page 7: Presentation1[1]

Main image: the main image is large and eye catching. The man looks powerful and confident due to his body language and facial expressions. He is the centre piece of the issue and he knows that you will be reading this because of him. His appearance is messy which makes him look even more cocky as he doesn’t need to look good for his fans to love him.

Contents styling: The way the contents is styled is very simple but effective as it, like the others, is written using a big, black font so it stands out. It is at the top of the page so the reader notices it.

Writing on the page: The “100 greatest Albums Ever” stands out as it is a huge main article. This is because people like to judge other people’s opinions and compare it with there own. This is makes the consumer want to read it. We also see “features” and “every month written in large font as they are important parts of the magazine and are sub headings.

Colour Scheme: The colour scheme is basic but very effective. This is because the dull colours make you drawn to the main image. And when your eye’s meet a bit of bright colour you automatically read it as it is associated with importance because it stands out from the rest of the page.
