OUR THRILLER FILMBy George Tuvey, James Lusher, Jess Mitchell and Amy Nock

Narrative OutlineThere is a man sitting in his chair and he is drinking whiskey. He is wearing a dressing gown and slippers, looking very cosy in his home.

He gets up and shuts the curtains before walking up stairs and opening his bedroom door.

There is a figure on his bed which we do not see. You see the man’s face for the first time. He starts playing a song on his record player and whilst the song is playing, we hear huge screams. We do not see what is happening in the room.

After, he walks out of his room and wipes his hands on a towel which he drops on the floor. You then see that the towel had blood on.

He walks downstairs and picks up his whiskey. He goes into the kitchen where he takes off his dressing gown and you see he is wearing a sharp suit and tie.

Ideas, Messages and Themes

The idea of the film is that you do not believe what you see. You see that he is comfy and drinking in ‘his’ living room before going upstairs but when he goes back downstairs and takes off the dressing gown it is very shocking because nobody really understands what is going on.

It is intended to make the audience ask lots of questions which may potentially be answered at a later point in the film (but not during the opening).

Target AudienceWe are aiming our film at the most common Thriller target audience - young adults and teenagers.

We are going to make sure that we appeal to our target audience by avoiding making it too complicated. However, it is going to have a certain level of complexity because in order to follow the conventions of a Thriller film we need to keep them asking questions.

It is also going to have ideas that may appeal to teenagers, such as murder or other things that obviously they don’t agree with but would be interested to watch.

Practical DetailsWe are planning on filming our opening intensively after school over the course of one week.

We are going to film in James’ house.

We are using HD video recorder as well as a tripod and dolly wheels to film our opening.

There are going to be few special effects in our film. We are contemplating doing a special camera shot which will require editing in order to work but we need to test it first!

We may find that we do not have enough time to film within the week or struggle to find a time when we can all film. If this is the case we will look at filming over a weekend.

ConventionsWe will use camera shots like; tracking shots, point of view, over the shoulder, close up, extreme close up and low angle shot. These will help establish what is going on and show the intense and creepy atmosphere, creating a mysterious mood.

We will use low key lighting because this is a common convention in thriller films and is dark and eery.

We will use a song that contrast with the mood, it will be a red herring as it will make the audience think that nothing bad is about to happen. The rest of the film will be silent throughout but we will enhance the diegetic sound.
