Conventions of Rock videos • Conventions include narrative and performance

shots.

This is an example from a Nickelback video. It uses a variety of performance shots as well as narrative shots to illustrate the story. The storyline is also very conventional for a rock video, as it is about pain and heartbreak.

• We followed this convention by having performance shots of the band. We also showed their instruments as this was another convention. The showing of instruments creates an individual identity for each member of the band as the audience can tell who the drummer or guitarist or singer is. It also makes the fans appreciate the music as they can see the instruments being used.

We also included narrative storyline illustrating the lyrics of the song, to give the lyrics more of an impact, adding emotions and feelings which our target audience can relate to.

CLOSE UPS.• In rock videos, we noticed that many close ups are used throughout the

video.

This is a screen shot from Nirvana’s music video Smells like teen spirit. There is a variety of Close up shots.

Close up of our media production.

In our media production, we stuck to rock video convention and made use of variety of camera shots especially close ups. We did this as it emphasises the emotion in the characters face, consequently, building up more feelings for the viewers as they begin to feel the characters pain.

Dulling of colour to enhance sad emotions.

• Another convention of a rock music video, is that during the sad bits of the song, the colour of the video seems to be dull. An example is in the video by the Kooks. The colour seems to become more dull when the couple are facing problems in their relationship.

This is a screenshot from our music video. We followed the conventions, as in the sad bits of the video, we made sure that we toned the brightness down so it created a dull and colourless atmosphere. This is parallel to the mood of the main character.

Lighting• Rock videos tend to use many shots where a spotlight is

shone at the main singer, mainly in performance shots.

This is a performance shot of the lead singer from nirvana. As you can see there is a spotlight over him.

This is a screen shot from our media production. We also tried to have a spotlight effect on the singers face.

Challenging forms and conventions. We decided to challenge a few conventions as we wanted to make our video slightly different with some originality. We noticed in most rock music videos, in the performance shots, there is always a live performance with a hyped up crowd. We decided to have performance shots, however we made use of a green screen, and performance shots without a crowd. Another reason we did this is so the main focus would be on the band.

This is where we used the green screen

Digipack Production.• Our digipack also followed the conventions of rock genre digipacks. After our

research we picked up on certain conventions. For example, the cover is simple, with less objects in the frame-and the colour is normally black and white.

• We took examples from other Digipacks of albums that shared the same rocck genre as us. Example we found were

The Killers. All four band members are included and the theme is black and white, with simple clothing.

Nirvana is another example of a rock genre Cover which has all band members with a black and white theme.

Our Production.

This is the front cover of out digipack. We stuck to the terms and conventions by involving all the band members and also having it black and white. We even kept our font simple like the Killers font and Nirvanas simplicity in the production. We made sure that the band members were not looking at the camera. We were inspired by the front cover of the kooks.
