Hornwood manor warfare

By Lord Theutberga, Sir Aliena, Serf Tilly wife of Baldwin the bald, and Serf Aliena wife of Odo the tanner

Page 2: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Weaponry• Siege engine-this is used to knock down castle walls• Mangonel- missels were launched from a bowl shaped bucket

at the end of one of the giant arms of the mangonel – not as accurate as the catapult or powerful but is very easy to build

• Ballistas-giant crossbows used to attack men• Siege towers-used as a weapon because it got them to the

height of the castle wall – levers and wheels to control the movement of the tower, covered the siege towers with wet animal hide so that they cannot be set on fire

• Arrows- long arrows were set on fire at the tip and were used to throw at enemy tents so that they could set the tents on fire

Page 3: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Page 4: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Weaponry• Bombards- cannons• Bronze cannons-put on wheels so they can be easily pulled by horses,

fired metals that could damage the walls of the stone castle• Catapult-hurls rocks or other things into the air• Battering rams- used to pound castle walls in the hope of breaking them

down– Different tips of the rams are made of different things– They can have fireproof tips

• Trebuchet-launched stone or metal objects up to 650 feet, large counterweight machine– This could be fired with great accuracy so that it would keep hitting the same place in

the castle wall so that it would collapse– Dead animals (to cause disease), burning pots (to set areas on fire), and stones could be

thrown in this – Round stones went farther and had more accuracy

Page 5: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Weapons continued…• Thrusting Weapons1. Jousting Lance2. Battle-tipped Lance- was

made of wood, usually ash and was used for battle

• Long-range weapons1. Long bows (can fire 12

arrows in a minute)2. Quarrels (fired from

crossbows, can pierce through armor)

• Edged Weapons• Most important after a

lance1. Dagger 2. One-handed sword

Page 6: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Weapons cont…

• Broadsword or scabbard- a protective sheath for swords

• Flail - Typically, the weapon is depicted as one (or more) weights attached to a handle with a hinge or chain

• Dagger and sheath

• Battle ax- could be hurled as a missile, used for close combat, the blade on the ax was about 10 inches long, could injury knights that were fully clothed in armor

Page 7: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Weapons continued…(you thought we were done:))

• Caltrops-spike weapons that were strewn across the battlefield (3 inches tall)

• Guns-fling large round stones or shots by using explosive powder– Explosive Powder-made of

saltpeter (stale urine and maneur), charcoal (partially burned wood), and sulfur

• War hammer- used for close combat action. Often they had a spike on them so that they could be used more often. Small handled war hammers were used for close combat and longer ones were used more for get riders off there horses

• Buckle

Page 8: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Weapons cont…

• Mace- was a bludgeoning weapon, was used for close contact fighting as well as on horseback, The head of the mace was made of either stone, bronze, iron, or steel. If this struck a knight it could injury him as well as destroy our armor .

The mace was easy and cheap to make.

Page 9: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Weapons for defense only

• Long poles to knock down the ladders and Siege towers

• Rope used to attach to the nose of the battering ram to keep it from swinging into the castle walls

Page 10: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Armor• We do not use chainmail as a top layer because it can be pierced through with arrows.• Armor- made of metal :

– Helmet– Under top coat of armor, jacket of chain mail, padded cloth, and leather– Mail gorget (chain mail underneath)– Spaulders (covers shoulders)– Lance rest (hold your weapon)– Couter (inside of your elbow)– The cannon of the Vambrace (forearm)– Gauntlet (hand and wrist)– Breast plate– Linen undershirt– Fauld of 5 flames ( 5 coverings near hips, made of metal)– Tasset (thigh)– Mail skirt (chain mail underneath)– Cuisse (upper knee)– Poleyn (knee)– Greave (shin)– Sabaton (foot)– Linen underneath everything– Leather shoes under the sabaton– Neck and the back of the legs are protected by chain mail

Page 11: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Knights battle needs• Carried-

– Sword– Shield– Visor-part of helmet pulled down to protect face– Lance– Ax– Long pole with a hook to catch onto the straps of enemies armor– shield– Dagger– Bow – Quiver– Carts with…

• Spades• Axes• Picks• Iron pointed stakes• Food and clothing for six months

Ally

• We are allies with Golden Lake Manor• We have discussed what we will do for each

other in times of war• We will combine forces in times of battle

Page 13: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Ally

• We are allies with Oakwood Manor• We have discussed what we will do for each

other in times of war• We will combine forces in times of battle

Page 14: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Castle Formation• Circular castle- so that no one can hide behind the walls of

the castle and perform a sneak attack• This also makes it harder to get inside because there are

less entrance• Walls are extremely smooth so that they can’t climb up the

walls• Nothing that they can attach to at the top of the castle• There is barbed wire type object along the top so that if a

rope is thrown over to try to get in the rope will be cut and the person will be unsuccessful

• Staircase is double spiral so that right handed people have the advantage(so we will trade everybody to be mainly right handed but they can still use their left hand)

Page 15: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Friend or Foe

• Use a coat of arms to tell who is good and who is bad

• Our knights are taught to detect different coats of arms so they know the good from the bad

• They can be colored, have picture, or have striped designs

Page 16: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Transportation/horses

• Knight ride on horses to travel, to ride into battle, and to hunt

• Need stirrups to get onto horse and they use a saddle

• Each knight has at least three horses– War horse(destrier)- trained to fight, they can cost up

to 20x the amount of a regular horseWe sell our horses once they are hurt for lots of money

to get a new horse or armor- If a horse is trained it is very valuable

Page 17: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Transportation/horses cont…• Lighthorse (palfrey)-used to get around/for regular fighting

practice• Packhorse- used to carry loads of armor, tents, and

equipment• These horses have a shaffron or spike on their head as well as

armor on their bodies to protect them further• Our horses are trained to bite and kick others.Soldiers on foot-• Usually archmenMoving

- when near a coast or river, the troops could move 20 or more miles a day with ships to carry the supplies

Page 18: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Jousting• Three rounds of jousting, points can be won in all three rounds• Our knights have high boards in the front and back to hold the knight securely in place as he

fights or jousts• We tar our people’s pants to their saddle’s so that they do not fall of as easily• We learn to joust on a quantain

– Training for jousting-after hitting a shield a person must dodge a sack on the other end of the machine

• Rules of jousting:– The challenger gets to choose his weapons first

• Swords are four feet long• Lances are eleven feet long

• Point winning:– 1 point for striking the opponent anywhere (you may not hit any place dangerous, such as the head)– 2 points for striking so hard that your lance breaks– 3 points if your opponent falls of his horse– AUTOMATIC WIN OF ROUND if your opponent falls of his horse– If your opponent is knocked off, you receive his horse and armor

Page 19: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Forming an Army

• Recruit people who owe Lord Theutberga service such as a serf first

• We use scutage• Scutage- the ability to pay the king or queen and they

would be rid of their war obligations for the year• Most people don’t enjoy fighting so the king could hire

them using the money from the scutage so that they would work better

• The men that served were willing to serve for the king in return for payment, so they then became the base for the English armies

Page 20: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Organizing the ArmySeparation into groups• Cavalry- knights and sergeants with a small amount of horses

– Lances- teams of 2 or 3 armored men(knights, sergeants, squire, pages, and bowmen)

• Soldiers on foot– Usually arch men(they used different types of bows- crossbowmen,

short bowmen, and longbow men– Other weapons on foot were- spearmen, javelin, axmen, and dagger

men– These soldiers were put in platoons of about 20 men– Five of these platoons were under the command of a squire (squire is

payed more)– These platoons then form battalions, which were instructed by

expierenced knights– Knights were payed more because they commanded so many troops

Page 21: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Battle Resumé

Preparing for knighthood• Go through all stages- squire, page, and knighthood• Sharpen weapons each day so that they are easy to

use• Fence with mock swords so that we will be skilled with

the sword and not get hurt• Ability to identify horses so that we can choose the

right horse for what we are doing• Knights learn the coat of arms• Local peasants learn archery so that they can help the

castle during times of war

Page 22: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Logistics

• How to kill massive amounts of people– Horses carry big wagons with all the supplies that

are needed – Groups of 20,000 men and horses would move

five to ten miles a day– When they went through the area they stripped it

of all food and resources– When other people came into and area they

would starve and sometimes die because of the lack of local food

Page 23: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Castle Building/rest of area(defense)

• Has a vault big enough to store lots of food• Has its own water supply so that it can’t be poisoned• Very deep foundations so that people can’t make tunnels through it• Thick walls to try to avoid them being destroyed• Surrounded by a moat with little land between castle and water so that

they have trouble getting in• Use Mortar(burned lime, cement, sand, and water) as a bonding agent

between the bricks• All food was put in castle when the castle is under attack• Burned all houses, crops, and trees so that there was no where to hide• Poison all other water supplies• Board open areas with wood, so that attackers weren’t safe to hide in

them – We could set them on fire or we could send arrows through them

Page 24: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

HAHAHAHAH!

• We have take the tithes and indulgence’s from the corrupt Catholic church to use them toward’s our weapons, armor, horses funds.

Page 25: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Relic Slide (optional)

• The priest blessed a relic that said we would win our battle.

Page 26: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Tactics (defense)• Boiled oil and water is poured on people that are trying to attack the castle.• To hurt the enemies horse (getting past the hore’s armor) we take a knife and stab

him on the underside of his stomach – there is no armor there• We boil sandbags and when we throw them on people, the sand gets into the

armor and blisters people’s skin• If attackers come to the draw bridge, we leave the draw bridge down so that the

people can get in • (Book Demonstration)• Build wooden walls that stuck out of the castle so that they could stay behind it,

and then when people came they got out of the walls and fired arrows at people• We put wet animal hide’s over the wooden walls so that they cannot catch fire

when we are in them• Once we are finished, we take off the animal hide’s and set the wood walls on fire

so that no one else can use them• We have a constable that helped us to control our defensive tactics

Page 27: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Tactics (defense continued)

• We have our men positioned on a high rock• This forces that attacking people to come

towards them• When this happens we fire many arrows at

the crowd – the amount of arrows causes more issue than the accuracy does

• This causes the fighters to be injured and disorganized by the time they reach the castle making them easier to take down

Page 28: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Tactics (neutral)• People are given rations of food so that we do not run out (when

we are in a battle)• We polish are armor so much, so that when we are in battle, the

light shines off of the armor and blinds the opponent• When our knights win small battles, they capture the person they

are fighting against and then hold them for ransom• To torture people for information, we tie their hands and feet to a

crank and crank it until they are stretched limb from limb• The bests knight’s train young squires, so that they grow up to be

the best they can be– They are trained in

• How to rede horses• Hunt• Fight with a large variety of weapons

Page 29: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Occupations

• Blacksmiths: made weapons, sharpened tools

• Armorer’s: made weapons and armor

• Guards: guard the cellar (where food was kept)

• Serf’s : trained in archery to fight in war

• All people contributed to the castle in times of battle

Page 30: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Game Plan

• Go to book…

Page 31: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

Tactics (offense)

• Once we have destroyed a castle, we take all parts of the castle (stone’s and such) and use it onto ours

• Are horses are trained to kick and trample and twist near foot soldiers

• If the battle has been going on for a long time, we just surround the castle and wait for them to starve

• When bodies were poisoned we threw them over castle walls to make other people sick

Page 32: Historyfinal goodworkgroup

If…

• If people try to dig holes under the castle to get in…• We drill underground and set the people on fire• We then dig another tunnel that meets up with the

people that are trying to get with the castle, and we put a torch down there so everything catches on fire
