Fragments & Run-on Sentences
What is a run-on?
A run-on sentence is when you put two independent clauses together without separating them with punctuation or conjunctions.
It is important to avoid a run-on sentence is so that the reader can understand the text clearly and not lose interest.
Examples of Run-ons
Incorrect: Amanda was the lead vocalist in her
band it was a punk rock band.Correct:
Amanda was the lead vocalist in her band. It was a punk rock band.
Examples of Run-ons
Incorrect: The night was cold we forgot to bring
our coats.Correct:
The night was cold, and we forgot to bring out coats.
What is a fragment? A sentence fragment is an incomplete
sentence that does not contain a subject or verb.
It is important to avoid sentence fragments so that the reader knows what the subject is and what the subject is doing.
Examples of Fragments
Incorrect: Toys of all kinds thrown everywhere.
Correct: They found toys of all kinds thrown
everywhere.
Examples of Fragments
Incorrect: For not doing work for the school.
Correct: Mr. Bariexca got fired for not doing for
the school.
