Questions 3-6

The media institution who would publish my music magazine is IPC Media. They're a British company and publish many popular magazines such as 'Ideal Home', 'Nuts' and 'Marie Claire'.

The only music magazine IPC Media publish is the famous 'NME‘. Therefore I think a music magazine like mine, with a different idea of containing many music genres to appeal to a wider audience, rather than NME’s indie/rock focus, would be something they would be interested in, as it would widen their audiences. NME is also targeted at a male audience, whereas my magazine has a female target audience, broadening the people the company is gaining profit from.

It is important for me to chose a successful publishing company such as IPC media to publish my product, as it will give the magazine a good chance of becoming successful and making enough profit.

Also included in my product is a website address for the magazine. Often websites are free, however I think by including a free website for my magazine it will still improve sales, by promoting the magazine itself. It would do this by including things such as backstage images of interviews and gigs etc. Encouraging the reader to go out and buy the magazine.

After creating my music magazine I would say that the target audience would be mainly female as I think a mixture of genres is something which males may not be as interested in, as they tend to stick to one music genre such as Kerrang’s Rock genre.

The age will be from 16-25years old as this age group tends to be more interested in music and also have a disposable income to spend on music magazines. Because of this the socio-economic status of them would be D/E as they would be mainly students.

I think that this target audience is a good one to have for a music magazine as it is usually young people who are interested in music, new artists/bands and festivals and concerts. Therefore they are the most likely to buy it on a regular basis and there are a lot of people around this age; so this particular group are financially right for my magazine. The secondary target audience would probably be male people of still around 16-25years old.

From my audience feedback I think it is fair to say my music magazine would be something of interest for my target audience and would sell well. They are a niche audience but quite a sizeable one; often niche audiences are loyal and regular buyers.

I attracted my target audience by containing features and story lines of young modern artists/bands which I think they could relate to, including my new artist Tandy Rice who is of the same age and gender as the target audience therefore they can easily identify with her.

The title 'The Mix' would also interest my target audience as it suggests

something new/modern and something which is ever changing, and young people tend to like to be up to date. I've also chose a statement pink as the colour of the title as my primary target audience is female it would be appealing.

My double page article is pleasing to the eye with a consecutive series of four photos neatly within a box. Its also in a striking pink and yellow to attract the reader as these would suggest something exciting and new; also of a pop/chart music genre.

The language style on here and the other pages is quite casual (E.g. ‘ “There’s a lot more to come form me on the partying front” she replies cheekily’) which the target audience of 16-25 year olds could relate to, as its quite friendly and welcoming.

I have used programmes such as Photoshop to edit my photographs and Indesign to actually create my magazines pages. I also do AS photography studies so was familiar with Photoshop. However I was new to Indesign and feel I have progressed well with it.

I also used the internet for research including www.google.com , for finding things such as circulation figures and for looking at the typical conventions of real music magazines. I have used www.blogger.com/ to store all of my work and the website www.dafont.com/ to download the fonts I required. A benfit of using ‘DaFont’ is that all the fonts are free to download.

I also had to use a digital camera and uploading devices such as pen drives to upload work in college. Another device I used is a scanner to scan work such as audience feedback and questionnaires onto the computer. I think this is an effective way of evaluating my product as it is quick and effective.
