Battle of the old and new The Beatles vs One Direction

Saturday, 31 August 13

(1964) The music video for the Beatles song ‘And I love her’ begins with a close up of a screen, demonstrating the technologies used. This

would have been seen as a very impressive and ‘modern’ start to a music video.

(2012) Meanwhile, the music video for One Direction’s song

‘Kiss You’ begins with a film countdown on screen. This

links back to older videos and gives a sense of time to the

video.

The Beatles are then portrayed using a wide shot, to demonstrate their instruments and the ‘modern’ props

in the background. The layout is kept simple and the attention is primarily on the music.

One Direction are also portrayed in this way, but due to their lack of

instruments, dance moves are put in place, with the aid of backing

dancers. This could demonstrate a shift over time in the importance of

the physical music.

Here, each band member has a number of frames to themselves as a way of conveying their

personalities to the audience, showing them not just as a band, but as individuals also.

However, this is not the case in this music video as atleast two of the band

members are always present in the background. This is an interesting take

on how we view members of a band in the modern day.

An interesting technique used in both of the music videos, is the

zoom out of the music video set to show all of the equipment and set

up as it looks in real life.

The way that we see this in both videos from such different

periods of time (nearly 40 years apart) clearly shows that music videos from today do still draw

inspiration from older and more classic music videos.
