Analysis 2 Insidious Trailer

Page 2: Analysis 2

Mise-en-scene• There is an average happy and homely location at

the beginning, which creates verisimilitude for the audience but also creates a sense of irony and cliché because obviously something bad is going to happen, therefore almost foreshadows the film.

• Low key lighting is used throughout the trailer, and this creates a scary and dull atmosphere, which is associated with the horror film genre. It also allows the audience to predict what will happen.

• The prop of a rocking horse is used in the trailer, and the fact it’s rocking on it’s own without being pushed allows the audience to become scared, this also builds tension as it’s the start to the things that will happen in the film. A rocking horse is also popular and stereotypical for a horror film and is used regularly, this means the audience will be familiar with this concept.

Sound• At the beginning of the trailer there is a non diegetic

sound effect of a clock ticking. This sound effect creates tension because it gives the impression that someone is waiting for something, and in this case it would be waiting for thing to happen in the horror film.

• The sound of the boy falling on the ladder and making a wood slab break is repeated after it’s happened, this emphasises this moment in the trailer, indicating it’s significant for the things that are about to happen.

• The diegetic sounds coming from the baby monitor in the trailer create tension because the noises are spiritual and paranormal. Therefore the baby monitor allows the sounds to come through and build up the tension and scariness of the trailer.

Editing• At the beginning of the trailer, fast paced editing is

used to quickly introduce the characters and the location of the film. It’s introducing them in a fast paced editing way so the trailer can move onto the tense parts of the trailer to really intrigue the audience.

• Fast paced editing is also used when the family get in people that are trying to find out where the noises are coming from, the fast paced editing creates the panic and builds tension.

Camerawork• A hand held camera is used at the end of the trailer

when the camera is being taken towards the end of a corridor. The hand held camera creates a sense of confusion and it makes the trailer seem very realistic.

• A close up is used when the woman is looking at the baby monitor, it shows her emotion and because she is confused and scared about the noises coming out of the baby monitor, the close up tells the audience exactly how the character is feeling.

Page 8: Analysis 2

• A high angle is used when the woman is looking up at the ceiling, and this high angle is indicating that something is above the people in the trailer.
