a. Narrator- not superstitious; practicalb. Le Gleo – superstitious

a. Definition – the use of clues to suggest future eventsin a story

b. Examples –1. sharks swimming around the lighthouse2. the name of 3 Skeleton Key and the fact that there are 3 lighthouse keepers

III. Allusiona. Definition – a reference to a statement,person, place, or event taken from literature, science,

politics, religion, sports, or mythologyb. Example – The Flying Dutchman –a legend. Le Gleo mentions it and we as readers know that he is

superstitious (as well as a little crazy!).

IV. The Rats a. Land Rats – not even a foot long, run away at the sound of anything, scared, wretched creatures b. Sea Rats – smart, vicious, run in hordes

(clannish), fierce, bold, large, sea-wise, foretell weather……as our narrator explains, DUTCH sea

rats are the worst!

V. Irony a. Definition – in general, a contrast between what is expected to happen and what actually happens. b. Example – they expect the sharks to be enemies and

eat the humans, but actually they end up eating the rats and helping the humans.

VI. Personification a. Definition – giving human qualities and character-

istics to nonhuman things b. Example – the rats communicating through shrill cries,

ridiculing and getting mad at each other for not reaching the boat, working together to attack thehumans.

VII. The Ending a. Le Gleo – goes crazy and has to go to an asylum

b. Itchoua – dies from the infection of the rat bitesc. Narrator – lives and continues to work at 3 Skeleton Key
