NESAC Overview

• The ZIE National Engineering Students Awards Competition is a ZIE initiative

• Initially Paperrete competition for UZ• The late Eng. Paul Kodzwa donated 20

trophies to ZIE towards NESAC• Hence NESAC will be running for the next 20

years• 2015 being the second year

NESAC Objectives

• Promote innovation• Scholarship• Entrepreneurship• Commercialization of projects• Cross linkages between engineering

universities• Stimulate engineering and technology

interests in upcoming engineers

NESAC 2014 Participating Universities

• Chinhoyi University of Technology• Harare Institute of Technology• National University of Science and

Technology• University of ZimbabweTwo participants drawn from each university

NESAC 2014 Winning Projects

1. Design of a 1 ton per day plant refining used lubricating oil-Tatenda Nengiwa, Chemical Engineering HIT

2. Mining conveyor belt optimization in a bid to minimize double handling of ore-Gift Dembetembe, Mining Engineering, UZ

3. Design of a bio-gas plant to produce CH4 (97 wt%) and organic fertilizer from bio-degradable MSW Design of a bio-gas plant to produce CH4 (97 wt%) and organic fertilizer from bio-degradable MSW , Taurai Mandlokuwa, NUST

All projects addressed critical Zimbabwe problems

NESAC 2014 Prices

• The first winner: The Eng. Paul Kodzwa floating trophy, a Paul Kodzwa trophy and a cash prize of $1000.00.

• The second winner: The ZIE shield and $500.00

• Third winner: ZIE shield and $250.00.• The other 5 participants: ZIE shields and

$100.00.

NESAC 2015 Competition

• To be held at HIT on 30 October 2015• Four major engineering universities

participating

NESAC’s Future• Participants will also be drawn from

polytechnics• At National diploma and higher diploma

level• Have an Engineering and Technology

week for high school that will run in parallel with the annual Research and Intellectual Outputs-Science, Engineering and Technology (RIO-SET)
