Lean Manufacturing in a Few Word

More firms are implementing lean inventory management techniques to

reduce costs, improve flexibility and have more time to focus on their

customers. Lean supply chain and inventory management enable Small

Medium Businesses (SMB) to improve efficiency and increase profits.

As firms look to reduce waste, increase turns and be more flexible with

their inventory, management professionals have attempted to identify

how lean techniques can be adopted to build flexible and collaborative

inventory.

Current references like APICS (American Production Inventory Control

Society shows that nearly 30 percent of companies are adopting lean

principles in their inventory management.

What is Lean Manufacturing

“Lean” refers to a systematic approach to enhancing value in a

company’s inventory by identifying and eliminating waste of

materials, effort and time through continuous improvement in

pursuit of perfection.

Objectives

➔ Improve Quality

➔ Elimination of Waste

○ Over production

○ Waste of Unnecessary Motion

○ Waste of Inventory

○ Production of Defects

○ Waste of Waiting

○ Waste of Transportation

○ Waste of Over processing

➔ Reduce Time

➔ Continuous Improvement

Principles of Lean Manufacturing

Five Principle of Lean Manufacturing are as Follows:

1. Production of value

2. Optimizing the Value Stream

3. Converting the Process to Flow

4. Activating the Demand Pull

5. Perfection of All Products, Processes and Services

Below are the few steps which are required to implement the Lean manufacturing :

1. Identifying the fact that there are wastes to be removed.

2. Analyzing the wastes and finding the root causes for these wastes.

3. Finding the solution for these root causes.

4. Application of these solutions and achieving the objective.

Advantages of Lean Manufacturing

1. Waste Elimination

2. Work place Standardization

3. Effective plant layout.

4. Quality will be enhanced at source level.

5. Increase the Productivity by 30% from the existing level.

6. Reduction of Production cost & other Overheads.

7. Reduce the Risk of non-compliance and

8. Eliminate Late Delivery.

Conclusion

The concept of lean manufacturing is new in some of the UN

developed countries, and proactive organizations have already

been observed to implement this tool in their functional

departments. This is primarily due to the multitude of cost

advantages which arise from having lean manufacturing

processes.
