A film distributor is one of the most important things when making and releasing a film as this is the company that will determine the success of your film. The aim of a distributor is to get a film and all of its associated products, including the promotion of the film to its intended audience. The distributor of a film is responsible for getting your film into cinemas, for marketing the film, setting a release date and making the film available of DVD, video on demand, on download and on the TV and what channels it will be shown on. There are six major studios who all have global distibutors that release the films with the bigger budgets for the production of the film. These six major studios are: Walt Disney Pictures Universal Pictures 20 th Century Fox Paramount Pictures Warner Bros Sony Pictures Our film is of the action genre and is about a girl called Lucy who gets kidnapped by a large drug organisation to find out a classified government secret that she knows and Mason seeks revenge on them to find her. Our primary target audience is males over 35 and our secondary target is audience in males under 35 and because of this our film will need a major distributor because from the research we did on the box office taking and the UK Film Council it shows that our film will be mainstream because of the type of genre it is (action) and will therefore need a major distributor to distribute and advertise our film so that more people know about it and it will reach and attract our intended audience.

What Kind of Media Institution Might Distribute Your Media Product and Why?

A film distributor is one of the most important things when making and releasing a film as this is the company that will determine the success of your film. The aim of a distributor is to get a film and all of its associated products, including the promotion of the film to its intended audience. The distributor of a film is responsible for getting your film into cinemas, for marketing the film, setting a release date and making the film available of DVD, video on demand, on download and on the TV and what channels it will be shown on.

There are six major studios who all have global distibutors that release the films with the bigger budgets for the production of the film. These six major studios are:

Walt Disney Pictures Universal Pictures 20th Century Fox Paramount Pictures Warner Bros Sony Pictures

Our film is of the action genre and is about a girl called Lucy who gets kidnapped by a large drug organisation to find out a classified government secret that she knows and Mason seeks revenge on them to find her.

As action is an extremely popular genre as shown from the box office takings and UK Film Council research our film will also need a larger budget because of the special effects that we will be using and our marketing products will cost a large amount of money to produce.

However there are many films that have been produced on a very small budget but have still been effective with their marketing and the quality of their film and made the film quite a big success. Some examples of these films are:

Paranormal Activity: this has a budget of $15,000 and made a gross box office of $107,917,283.

Halloween: this had a budget of $300,000 and made a gross box office of $47,000,000

The Purge: this had a budget of $3,000,000 and made a gross box office of $64,423,650.

Box Office Takings Research

For our film we would use 20th Century Fox as our distributor. This is because this company have distributed films that are similar to ours for example Man on Fire and Taken. They are also distributed many action films although not like ours they are still of the same genre, these are films such as X-men, Avatar and Dead pool.

We would expect our film to be shown in a multiplex cinema as it is a mainstream genre and because of this we will have a bigger audience that will want to watch it.

In terms of marketing, because our film is an action film and this is a very popular genre according to Box Office takings and the UK Film Council, we will advertise our films trailer on TV channels like ITV as this is a popular channel and we need this for our mainstream audience as we want them to see this being advertised and we want it to make them want to watch it. We will also promote our film on social media, websites like Facebook and YouTube because from our target audience member profile, we were told that this is the sort of thing that they were interested in. We will also use posters to advertise our film in cities and on buses so that they are easily visible for our audience. As our film will have a bigger budget we can also spend money on making things like apps that can be downloaded on computers, phones and tablets and also merchandise that will help us advertise our film more but also help us make a bigger gross box office as people will be spending money on buying it.
